There was 12 notes before there was even division. It was Bach that pushed equal temprament (equal spacing). Before that, the ratios were actual ratios (perfect 4ths and 5ths), though you couldn't just transpose music and expect to s

So what makes Haker News great is a lot of "features" that it doesn't have. How ironic that others spend so much resources adding features that are ultimately detrimental. But I guess it's a matter of who the audience i

For games that scrolled the screen, those had to happen essentially between scans, so a lot of tricks were employed. Fixed addresses in the code, unrolled loops, and self modifying code to avoid the expensive zero page indicrect indexed a

Why don't I like linked lists? Cause they are complete disarray :) Ok, not a great pun, but I have always used arrays when possible, even for stuff that needs inserting. I just assume I won't have a million elements to shuffle.

There's an awful lot of points on there that are true or partially true. But some things, like terrorism, loomed much larger then than they do today.

That's very subjective. Some would say wokeism threatens progress, others say anti-wokeism ghreatens progress because wokeism IS progress. Anti-science is just saying that the other side disagreees with some science that is incovnven

I think believing the propaganda for Russians is a matter of mental and physical self preservation. If you know it's a war and it's bad, what do you do? Remain silent - bad for mental health. Say or do anything about it - physi

Unfortunately, water isn't as simple as electricity. Pipes almost always end up having turbulent flow inside, in which case, pressure drop is proportional to flow rate squared. Whereas for electricity, voltage drop is always proportio

I don't understand. Why all these software tools for publishing and managing the data. Why not just put the data in a csv file from a python script, then use gnuplot to plot it when requested from a web server running on the pi. Remin

Typically the beam has to fit where it needs to go. A lighter beam doesn’t mean you have room for a bigger one.

Back in the day, the printer port was the way to interface experiments on the cheap. I had a spare printer card just in case I blew one up. There were expensive A/D boards and such used in labs, but it was too expensive for hobbyists

Still using office 2000. its simple and fast, never liked the later bells and whistles like the "ribbon". Sadly, windows 10 doesn't get along with it perfectly well.

Possibly the engineers working there took account not only the size of the HDMI connector, but also the plugs that go into them. if you put two connectors next to each other, you would only be able to use one at a time.

Yes, indeed. If it's a cheap one, it's starting current will probably be 4x it's run current. But it's probably a 400 watt unit, and at 1600 watts for starting, barely within spec for the tiny relay in the smart plug.

This isn't new. I was annoyed enough to write a rant about it on my website back in 2004, 17 years ago. http://www.stentex.net/~mwandel/rants/hp_scanjet_4600.html

Plug/socket terminology is not necessarily the same as male/female terminology. The socket can be male, if it is the one with the metal pins. The power connector on the back of a PC is a good example. https://en.wikip

25 years ago I treasured my paper copy of an article about how to do general purpose I/O on a printer port, and always kept an old PC around for experiments for that. But with Raspberry Pi computers, interfacing is so much easier. An
