Yes it can. End-to-end encryption is enforced by your app, not by the protocol you use. This is a key part of how end-to-end encryption works.

Glad to hear you had a good experience with Prosody! We're currently preparing a new major release. There's plenty of fun and cool stuff going on around XMPP, it's funny to see the comments from folk surprised whenever they h

How does Spotify "force" you to listen to stuff? I have a very different experience. Pandora (many years ago when I tried it) did not let you choose what you wanted to play (e.g. am album) and Spotify did (and still does). I have

Good question! There are a few reasons. One is that we want to provide consistency across platforms. There is no "Conversations for iOS" but there is a Snikket for iOS, and we are working on more platforms. There are many XMPP cli

I don't think this is a competition, but to clarify: XMPP has long been used in the public sector (via suppliers such as Isode) since before Matrix was conceived, and continues to be still. I've spoken with multiple organizations

It probably won't happen, but I'd love to see the concept of channel binding reach the web ecosystem. It allows you to securely verify the certificate, independent of any third party. However it only works when you and the server

XMPP and Matrix already have WhatsApp bridges, though through they are not officially supported or accepted by WhatsApp. Hopefully what will change now is that such bridges can be updated to use officially-supported methods, which (if Whats

For what it's worth this issue is not as big as people generally make it out to be. Everything doesn't need to support everything for communication to be successful. The XMPP Standards Foundation publish an annual compliance basel

You're welcome to your opinions, but just know that many people happily using XMPP disagree with you. As a replacement for Discord? I think it depends on the community, but it's true we don't have anything remarkably equivale

The main reason CLAs exist is to facilitate this kind of "rug pull", so I think the lesson is to either accept that it will happen or never sign a CLA.

Many apps do that, it allows the app to stay connected which (perhaps counter-intuitively) is more efficient for realtime apps. It's entirely optional though, and even if the app has such a notification it can be hidden. On some ROMs h

Yes, Movim and Converse.js are two web-based XMPP apps that support installation as a PWA. XMPP supports running over websockets (or even long-polling HTTP, but that's thankfully less necessary these days).

Conversations has supported Google push notifications since 2016, long before Android started getting more aggressive about battery optimizations. It's been a standard feature of XMPP mobile apps for as long as it's been necessary

This has been happening to a bunch of XMPP apps recently, and as a maintainer of another one (which closely based on Conversations) I'm fearing the worst next time I submit an update. The worst part is the lack of communication from Go

Yes, of course you can query the messages - that's why the feature exists, and what XMPP clients use it for. Otherwise we'd be missing messages all the time. I think these days the term "leave" is a bit vague, and it

Querying past messages works on both rooms and accounts (XEP-0313). You can filter by id (e.g. "catch up" since some previous message) or by time range (useful for a history browse UI). It has been this way for a long time... I qu

Yes, XEP-0198 is how reconnects (network changes, train tunnels, etc.) are handled. When the client reconnects to the server they exchange where each received up to before the disconnect and each side resends anything that was dropped. This
