I'm glad you said this - I'm exactly the same. I automatically type "color: gray" when coding, I wouldn't dream of using them them outside my text editor. It may not be limited to natural vs programming language though. I also have no issue

This hasn't worked for a couple of days at least. Yes, the invites go out, but the signup page only intermittently accepts logins (presumably as they open/close the floodgates).

I use both. I find that sometimes one or the other will display some weird traceback, or worse, silently fail. Now my first reaction to a problem that isn't obvious is to switch debugger. Sadly I think the world of Javascript debugging stil

I'm surprised this hasn't received more upvotes (considering the other stuff that regularly gets upvoted here). The message may be obvious to some, or over the heads of others, but the post is about a principle that I find worthwhile holdi

Erm... if the server-side was already escaping properly then there would be no way for users to mess with the database. Only if it is not escaping properly is this code vaguely useful. It's not like you can't store semi-colons in an SQL dat

Perhaps http://producingoss.com/en/difficult-people.html could give you some insight. I much recommend this book as a guide to the basics and best practices of running an open-source project - it certainly helped me when I started. I don'

Unfortunately the assertion that "liquid never touches B" is false (see a surge in the flow at 1:06 that does reach it). Therefore I don't reckon the break can be where they assume it to be.

I got mine for free from a user of my software who wanted me to add support :) In fact I finished that just this week, I'm considering using it full-time for some of my machines now. The nice thing as far as I'm concerned is that unlike som

I'm intrigued. So many email signatures for example plead that you don't print them out unless necessary. Are there really people in the world who print out every email and document they receive?

You're not alone. Interestingly I'm also in the UK, and that this post has gone so long with no comments/upvotes maybe we're in the minority :) I haven't associated it with particular times though. Just skimming the front page isn't terribl

I first got into Lua when a number of years ago someone (thankfully) pointed me to it to save me writing my own scripting engine for an application. As one of those people crazily obsessed with pursuing simplicity, I really grew to apprecia

That's an interesting point, because of all the languages I prefer working with Unicode (UTF-8) in Lua. This is because I know exactly where I am, there's no under-the-hood encoding/decoding to slow down my application, etc. This is a commo

For my part, I got involved in an open-source project very early on. I produced plugins and patches for the project, and people in the community gave valuable criticism and helped me improve my code. I didn't do this consciously to improve

Except that irssi itself can speak XMPP with a plugin, you need to mentally decouple UI from protocol. That said, irssi-xmpp is certainly in need of some hacker love...

Indeed, which is why it's typically not done, there are many better XMPP clients with debugging capabilities (including command-line ones) than telnet. Personally I much prefer debugging XMPP to debugging IRC protocol issues since it's alwa

I somewhat suspect I'll be unique on this one here. I use nano full-time. I use it because it is simple, it gets the job done, and I don't find that I need anything more. It's true it's missing a couple of features commonly found in code

(I shan't confess this is partly an excercise to see how deep HN will nest comments) Lua is interesting in that instead of using traditional regex it comes with its own "pattern" matching - the implementation is much cleaner than most regex

This confirms my belief that nothing compares to real-life usability testing. Not enough people do it, and those that do are always surprised at the results. You can't second-guess users, they are unpredictable. Well not entirely, but the

A group of us are working on a Jabber/XMPP server in Lua. Although popular belief seems to be that Lua is really only suitable for embedding in applications, I think it really deserves the chance to be more than that. Our server project is
