I actually really like that idea, constantly scanning logs for hyper-specific red flags. I might start doing this.

True story: I worked at a startup where the founders were married . Nobody told me, they had different last names, and I looked like a complete fool when I was shocked they were going on a beach vacation together.

As a dev manager (small team) I am trying to never “assign” work. I just prioritize and describe, and let fellow coders pull the items that are most appealing to them. Sometimes it means that I wind up doing work I would rather delegate if

Hunger Games is pretty clear about what its influences are: Ancient Rome and Reality TV. Some people will claim Collins stole the idea from Battle Royale, but it is more likely the two authors had the idea independently.

I don’t think in my case that it was necessarily about me and my performance. Just like I don’t think that the OP’s story is necessarily about him and his performance. When teams grow, they change. There is an all-too-often unspoken assum

Doh! I had a nagging suspicion about the public school thing. Now I have outed myself as an ignorant American.

Are you this pedantic about the non-marginal costs of all government services? This public school is free at the point of delivery or calling the police is free at the point of delivery ?

To second this... If there is any chance you have obstructive sleep apnea (big neck? snore a lot? have trouble staying awake during movies?) get a sleep study ASAP. Treating that can be life changing.

It is possible that you are not being intentionally sidelined. This has happened to me, where a company hired a new PM to help us scale, but just took over the parts of my job that I most loved, leaving me with just the drudge work. I was l

A lot of the statistics on The danger of mopeds/scooters/motorcycles do not differentiate between a commuter rising to work on a 200cc scooter and a bar-hopper riding home on the freeway on a litre sportbike. In the US, anyway, ha

Just watch the classic film “Roman Holiday” and you will associate scooters with gorgeous people.

I have commuted via bicycle and Vespa scooter and I feel so much safer on the Vespa. I can keep up with traffic, I have proper mirrors and signals, and I am wearing better safety gear.

Programming, testing, debugging, tuning, and yes, configuring are all parts of the umbrella that I like to call “Professional Software Development”. All valuable skills, worth respecting and improving.

I don’t think there’s any sauce you could pour over a chain gang of immature programmers to make them palatable. When building teams, I deliberately aim for a mix of developers of more and less experience, as that is a more realistic sustai

Short for “Gypsy”. Many consider it to be a racial slur. Just as some people use “Jew” as a verb in a similar way (more obviously a slur).
