Fact: They call themselves gipsies ("cigany") when they talk among each other. You hear it all the time on the subway, and I heard it several times while working there. You are right, the PC term right now is "roma". But the distinction bet

I recently spent 2 days working on a renovation project at a local slum here in Hungary. The slum is a couple hundred gipsy families, living in unfinished/abandoned houses without water, gas/heating, they steal electricity off the grid. Thi

Works on mobile? I usually have Facebook open in a tab on my desktop/macbook. But I never check it on my iPhone, somehow the content on Facebook (mostly funny pics, articles, sometimes actual photos of friends at events) doesn't fit the con

The Lean Startup - Too bad this wasn't around when I was starting my (now failed) startup 4 years ago. Softwar - Larry Ellison's story. Fascinating read. Games People Play - Classic by Eric Berne. Must read psychology. Short, and you will g

I tried to read Zen a couple of years ago but lost interest. I picked it up again this year and got through it this time. I think [one of] the basic messages of the book, that of paying attention and enjoying the little things of life like

I learned how to program in Haskell. Although Haskell is hard, learning a language is still relatively easy compared to writing good 100KLOC+ sized software in whatever language. In 2013 I hope I will figure out how to write good software i

Actually it's worse. Canonical made pirates of their customers, too. They downloaded and used a piece of software which they didn't have a license for.

Actually I disagree on your first point. My first job was maintainenance programming, and for some reason I stuck around and did it for 3 years. That has taught me the suck of trying to maintain and work with shitty code. Now, X years later

I hope you don't take offense at what I'm about to say, but the code snippet you provided is not maintainable in the sense of not being readable. It sacrifices maintainability for cleverness. As someone above pointed out, sometimes it's bet

I recently learned Haskell and am writing code in it on a daily basis, although I'm still a novice. In my limited experience, Haskell is like any other PL, you can write clean, readable code or a horrible mess. My major concern with Haskell

I think it's a bit disingenuous to compare yourself to Spotify (at least on HN). I think a big part of Spotify's business is that they have agreements with the big 4 record companies for each country, and they're rolling out their service a

The funny bits are the Ayn Rand lines. Rand was a philosopher-writer. She wrote two famous books, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, which codify her philosophy, Objectivism. Objectivism has Man as a divinely rational, self-interested, h
