A reasonable compromise is to just have a SIM card with a basic prepaid phone (and SMS) plan but no data. Lots of people I know do that. Phone is online at home, in the workplace, at restaurants etc, and you can communicate.

Not really. A thin client is just another way to add a seat to a multiuser machine. Thin clients are just fine for a lot of real work (programming, office tasks). But for home use you need clean 1080p fullscreen video playback and none o

Wired, of course. Though I did accidentally configure the sending instance of PA to send multicast pakcets. Which it did, with abandon, even when no audio was playing, saturating the wifi to such an extent that I was driven to despair bef

I keep thinking of more stuff to add. Multiple monitors: Well, a typical video card has two output sockets and easily drives two monitors. So why not two users? Because multiseat only works if each session gets to own its video chip, in

A few more details. One thing that doesn't work very well is storage devices. For one thing, as soon as one appears, the (non-multiseat aware) file managers all jump on it and try to mount it. And two of the three get a password pro

I use it. It works. I lucked into a semi-obsolete high-end gamer machine with a 6-core i7 and 24GB of memory and three full-length PCI-Express slots. I leave my machine on. The standby power of this monster (850W power supply) was too hi

I've needed glasses for myopia since my early teens. As the inevitable decline in eye focusing ability set in (I'm now 52), I've taken to keeping a pair of glasses with weakened prescription (-1, 1.25, 1.5 diopter all seem t

I went through this exercise about 15 years ago. At the time, the solution was to build a cable that attaches to the computer's parallel printer port at one end, and the 1541 at the other, and run special software under DOS. There ma

Quick to add that I also have a backup strategy! Still, a catastrophic failure of a storage device is very inconvenient.

For my home setup, at least, it's simple: Put the OS on a dirt cheap 120GB SSD, and all the user data on a multi-terabyte hard disk. You can always selectively migrate other performance critical, but can afford to lose, stuff onto th

Who even needs a kernel? First start learning to program on the bare metal, like us oldsters used to do. The Arduino environment is wonderful for this. Dirt cheap, easy to get started by copy/paste code, and the environment is full

True, it's not a safe bet, but at the price it's a fun experiment. I've now concluded after further playing with mine that 1600x1200 mode effectively doesn't work (you get a picture, but it's mirrored horizontally

It's a question of expectations. Me, I want a cheap, wifi-capable motion sensing camera on my LAN, behind a firewall, not on the public internet. So I ordered the Orange Pi Lite and its camera module, altogether a smidgen less than $3
