It sure does sound like they could potentially build an AWS/Google Cloud competitor, but with Oculus just getting started I guess it's not a priority for them at the moment.

Not true at all. The concept of "siesta" exists, but nobody does it at work. It's mostly something for retired people with a lot of free time and not much to do.

Perhaps these acquisitions are not so much a bet on "neo-banks", but rather serve as an insurance to make sure they never grow large and pose a threat?

Google allows everything by default, and only takes down apps later if they become a problem, whereas Apple reviews everything that is published beforehand.

Yahoo is in such a strange position, in that they have a lot of great products, users and revenue and at the same time I can't think of a single big player that would want to own them, let alone for a fair price.

That's exactly the point this article is trying to make, that you get more than just seed money being part of YC.

Cut them some slack, a lot of winners today wouldn't have looked like obvious winners when they first applied at YC.

Well said, it's the product and the execution what matters, not the product logo and name. Heck, you could probably use a ridiculous name with a logo designed in MS Paint and as long as the product delivered amazing value people would

I guess it depends on the industry but from my own personal experience, fraud is non-existent if your targeting decently specific (i.e. specific interests).

I'll give another perspective: In my industry at least, Google has become incredibly expensive due to a few unicorns spending ridiculous amounts of money just to put competitors out of the game (because they have the money for that, ev

Great resource, thanks for sharing. There's a lot going on lately about neural networks and deep learning on HN, but as a developer not in the field, it can be a bit intimidating to wrap your head around it all.
