Germany defaulted on some of the payments and France responded to that by occupying Ruhr ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupation_of_the_Ruhr ). That took out a substantial portion of Germany's production capacity

Nuclear operators try to minimize losses of the shutdown by not replacing parts that are still workable until the shutdown. When you know of the impending shutdown, you can plan for the plant to be as EOL as possible. If you plan for long t

That's very impressive amount of solar capacity, but the nameplate power is not super useful measure in solar, as the capacity factor for solar is somewhere between 10-15% in Germany, while for nuclear it's more like 90%. To get r

They call it HAN here in Finland too, but it's the same interface as the Netherlands one.

This applies to Finland and Sweden too, perhaps others to follow.

That's just it - these are no more customizable than real buttons! They come with preprinted symbols for their function, so no cost advantage of customization.

And how much cheaper can this stuff really be than real buttons?

I believe the recommendation is to run btrfs on top of mdraid, which works fine. Meta is said to use btrfs, but apparently they don't care about the raid implementation, so there's nobody paying for that development. OpenZFS works

Are spot electricity contracts available, so that you can do it like that? Makes sense then. And of course the installation cost of battery is way smaller than for a PV plant as no roof work is required.

At least a rooftop PV installation breaks even* here in Finland with scarce sun and cheap power. Batteries are not there yet. If you don't need the battery as a UPS, I would wait still a few years before going for a home battery. *: Ea

Very good points. I do think the grid battery capacity being added this year is going to be mostly li-ion.

Pumped storage is a type of grid storage, but I don't think TFA includes it in battery storage. Pumped storage is a fine technology, but is there a lot of build potential left for it?

I guess I earned the snark for not mentioning the batteries. Weirdly the news item doesn't tell what sort of energy storage capacity these battery installation have, only the peak power output of 14.3 GW for this year's addition.

Of course those capacity factors hide one important bit, the dispatchability. While the capacity factor is the same in this list for wind and hydro, the wind and solar generation are naturally capped by nature. When demand exceeds the natur

There's TOTP support in Keepass2Android and KeepassXC (and surely other Keepass implementations too). These are open source and you can control how the password database is kept: cloud storage is supported as well as local file (that y

This VW solution really is worst of both worlds, as these are capacitive surfaces with printed symbols. So you cannot really iterate on them post-release.

No idea of what precise sort of hardware is there, but the fact is that these cables consist of a bunch of fibers. Dozens of them typically, quick search suggests up to 144, but I doubt that's a physical ceiling. So I suppose they make

Yes, I believe MOX is one option of what you can make from what's left from reprocessing. I think it's possible to make more conventional fuel there too, but then what are you going to do with the plutonium.

Those are breeder reactors. In breeders, less fissile materials are transformed into more fissile ones. That's interesting technology and very nice on paper, but there are practical challenges. Reprocessing is another thing entirely. I

I suppose a modern gas or oil burner doesn't need one. But this sort of solar based heater as well as ground-source heat pumps typically would need it. They are not very expensive however, as they are just heat-insulated tanks of water

There are solutions in the market for this. The heat recovery system is filled with glycol solution, which means it doesn't freeze over even if left unpowered during sub-zero outside temperature. Then there's a temperature sensor
