Fennel[0] is a Lisp-like language that transpiles to Lua. It was originally developed by Calvin Rose (author of Janet[1]), but is now maintained by Phil Hagelberg (author of Leiningen[2]). [0] https://fennel-lang.org [1] https:&#

I feel pretty dense, because I still struggle to get my head around automatically adding changes to a revision. Sometimes, I'll make a change locally to a file that I'll use during the development process that I have no intention

While I understand the aversion, I can't help but think that people miss out on some really cool experiences when they balk at stuff like 1-based arrays or parens in Lisp or whatever. Sure, those quirks may remain deal breakers after y

What is jank's tooling like? Clojure's felt very much like an afterthought, unfortunately. I do like having a decent set of tools right out of the box. I think Gleam was smart in this respect.

But when you have multiple jobs, doesn't admin end up being a greater proportion of your time since you have to deal with it for several companies?

At the C-suite level, I'm noticing more "fractional" positions, which — as far as I can tell — is a fancier way of saying part time. (This may be the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon at work, though.)

This is exactly the part I got hung up on, too. The exact reasons aren’t important for this blog post, but neither the reference implementation [...] nor the other open source Go Lua intepreters I could find were a good fit for my nee

This story reminds me of another told by a keynote speaker at a CERF conference. IIRC, the story goes that US government scientists on the west coast were trying to figure out where the salmon spawned in a certain region and thus conducted

Task* is another alternative, although I admittedly only use it with simple hobby projects in C so I can't speak to whether it scales well or not. * https://taskfile.dev/

The Janet Street folks, who created this, also did an interesting episode[0] of their podcast where they discuss performance considerations when working with OCaml. What I was curious about was applying a GC language to a use case that must

AI weather is making great progress with the likes of GraphCast, Aardvark, NeuralGCM, Aurora, etc. It seems like the teams that produce these models often include folks from Microsoft and Google, which makes me wonder if there's much c

I'm excited to give this a try, as I think I'm the target audience. I tried using Helix[0] (my editor of choice) with mpls[1], but it didn't quite scratch the itch. These days, I use a sturdy notebook and cheap (but awesome!)

And don't even think about starting a sentence with 'and'. I think we're taught rules like this to prevent us developing bad habits at the outset. Then, once we have more experience, we know when it's okay to brea

I don't think this is necessarily unique to programmers. I often heard the same sentiment expressed by (non-CS) postdocs, who longed to leave academia to become artisanal bakers or small-scale mushroom farmers.
