Honest question, what does Heroku offer over Elastic Beanstalk other than being more expensive? I switched to EB and it seems more flexible and a lot cheaper, and I haven't wasted hours on admin.

Not having a fear of death would seem to be very strongly selected against in evolutionary terms, so I'd say it's reasonably uncommon.

I wonder what effects this process has on the organism. For instance what would happen if humans ate graphene?

Oh god... doesn't this mess with plugins or something?

Note sure about a guide but I would start without any plugins at first. Otherwise you never learn what's vim and what's a plugin, and working on remote servers will be a pain. Also for a lot of plugins, there's a better way o

I highly recommend not using the Esc key, remap to jk or caps lock that you can reach without moving your hands. It makes a pretty big difference.

Julia is a lot (lot) faster than Python, Matlab or R. This doesn't matter so much if you're gluing library calls together (if using well-known ML algorithms that use native BLAS/LAPACK etc) but for custom stuff Python et al a

Thank god we have all these libraries. I mean remember the days when the back button worked, pages rendered quickly without 3-second ajax spinning animations, the browser remembered where you were when you clicked back, your phone didn’t ra

In a market setting, people will buy the car that prefers killing others to killing its occupant I feel. This matches what human drivers instinctively do in the situation as well. Maybe there will be regulations in place mandating which dec

The article raises some good points but there is still a dichotomy here to me. Compare a successful startup with 2 founders with an established company with 2000 employees in the same business. The scale of the difference in employees vs th

Do you have any evidence that drinking/drug taking leads to LBD? Otherwise, this is just a classic it-won't-happen-to-me-because-I-do-X justification (see: I won't get cancer because I eat well, I won't have a car accide

My optometrist prescribed exactly the same thing for the same reason. I sometimes have trouble seeing in the distance because of too much computer/phone use, and your explanation is spot on what he told me.

SQLite works great as the database engine for most low to medium traffic websites (which is to say, most websites)...Generally speaking, any site that gets fewer than 100K hits/day should work fine with SQLite. Do people agree with t

I'm in my late 20s, I see my friends chasing high stress jobs working for other people's benefit and honestly don't understand it. Why would I want to be an investment banker working 60 hour weeks when I could build something

This is hilarious, I love it. I would also love to see this made into a public service with some clever ML algorithms to keep the conversation going as long as possible.

I have tried this with vim, but there are a lot of things lacking that an IDE could provide - code completion, searching of references, overview of the whole document, auto closing of blocks etc. It's probably possible to set something

L-BFGS-B is a hugely popular algorithm for box-constrained minimisation and the best implementation is still in Fortran. This is commonly used in machine learning. Things like scipy.optimize.fmin_l_bfgs_b are just wrappers for the Fortran c
