Thanks, but I guess I was asking more about how this affects the other development characteristics described. You still have to deal with the massive repository and infrastructure, but if you're Go, for example, and you want to change

What I'd like to know and no one seems to mention: What's the experience like for teams not running a Google service and instead interacting with external users and contributors, e.g. the Go compiler or Chrome.

Eric is wrong.[1] We could change it, we're choosing not to and I vehemently disagree with those who think we should change it. [1] Well, he was right when he wrote that, but he's wrong now.

Don't mistake the dev workflow for what the customer sees. Now that we're open source we've pulled back the curtains, but this is how it's always worked. We plan new language features years in advance.

Warn-as-error can be set for individual warnings as well as for every warning. However if your build is spitting thousands of warnings and no one cares, that sounds like an issue someone should be looking at...

To put it simply, the amount of C# code written makes F# look like a rounding error. If C# gets these improvements there will be millions of lines of C# that could get better without C# programmers having to learn F#.

That's not a "problem" in type inference, that's a design decision where lambda syntax can represent either delegates or expression statements. This is how LINQ-to-SQL can take a LINQ expression and turn it into a SQL st

Roslyn needs cross-platform MSBuild to build itself for every platform (without Mono). Same with corefx. So even if you're currently using or thinking about using .NET xplat and don't have any plans to use MSBuild, this move is ne

Speaking for myself, not MSFT: No, VS is a hellish mix of C++ and .NET. My personal prediction is that VS is unintelligible and will never be ported to anywhere else.

It may actually work on *nix, I just haven't tried it. The powershell script won't run and you'll have to do it manually, but it's just a ten line script or so.

This is a pretty Mono-focused article so I don't really think it's relevant to the recent release of VS 2015. I'm currently working on Roslyn CoreCLR and cross-plat and Mono is working on integrating more of Roslyn into their

In fact, that often even bleeds forward into the front end. For a compiler, you're in this state of actively discarding information. Comments? Don't even lex them. Variable names? Just de Bruijn index them. FYI, for anyone think

I think it's a nice idea, but seems difficult in practice. First, I think embedding language knowledge into the VCS is fraught with peril. For one, does that mean that you need to rev your VCS version every time your language changes?
