Someone else was going to use a unit of energy to mine Bitcoin, but you supplied it instead when you mined it. You don’t get “new” energy, you get “that energy”, the energy that the person somewhere else would have used to mine the Bitcoins

Imagine that as you mine BTC, you’re instantly paying that BTC for someone to drill some oil and put it in a barrel wherever you plan to use it. The system of you and your BTC plus that other person and the oil in the earth is a battery. Ok

It’s not double-spending energy. The chunk of energy you generate isn’t spent by you, it’s supplied to Bitcoin users to power their transactions. You only consume the second chunk of energy for yourself.

> There is no way to regain the energy that was turned into heat while mining bitcoins, so bitcoin is not a battery. You can regain the energy where it’s needed by using Bitcoin to purchase it

Nothing in my post assumes that Beaker is a "commercial" product, nor that it's in search of any market that's necessarily measured in dollars. My claim is that projects like Beaker neglect to ensure that any handful of

Beaker Browser is a perfect example of what I call a “Bloated MVP”: it’s when a team works for years on a product, but neglects to ensure that the product has an actual use case. A couple months ago I wrote about what I see as serious issue

If the top of HN had posts like this every day: "College is the biggest mistake I made in my life, I'm trapped in deep debt forever", that would be good perspective.

Interestingly, “needing a kick in the butt to shake things up” is a kind of antifragile-ness property of our society, but not the good kind of antifragile where the system adapts in a certain direction based on what kind of kicks its enviro

In this case the XSS vector is the fact that CSS allows running JavaScript in some browsers [1], but still, a lot of systems that are supposed to be weak and domain-specific are discovered to be Turing-complete, e.g. Conway's Game of L

It's Turing complete if you let a human feed a bunch of clicks to proceed along the computation steps. [1] It also allows embedded JS (in some browsers), which is Turing complete. My point is that languages really quickly surpass the T
