The main thing I notice about new Reddit is the amount of autoplaying videos. I wonder if this is at least partially motivated by the more addictive endless scrolling design of new Reddit.

The normalisation of this creepy fucking corporate surveillance is depressing. Not for the people wearing these things, they won't give a shit, but for everyone else that just wants to be left alone.

It’s not the whole Anglosphere. 24 hour time is used extensively in the UK. For example, all public transport uses 24 hour times here.

Hell you can often even find the Korg Volca FM for under 100 bucks and it’s a patch compatible DX7 clone. I have a Casio CZ-5000, the 61 key version with sequencer. It’s well made but given its age I’m not sure I’d want to take that to a gi

Depends on what you mean by "small" and "growing". If you mean database size, SQLite can handle massive amounts of data. I've seen 281 TB quoted as theoretical max size.

I think that particle size is important. Particles caused by tyre and brake wear are going to be much larger than, say, diesel particulates. That size differences is going to affect how easily they can be absorbed into your lungs.

Oh yeah "tube bogeys" are definitely a thing. Whenever my best mate goes on about having access to "cultural experiences" that I don't have for living in the sticks I remind him it comes at the cost of massive tube

You're speculating about something that hasn't happened, using something that doesn't exist; no body is driving batteries large enough to destroy a bridge about. They are driving liquid fuel tankers that can do that around re

I love Framework's product launch style. So down to earth. "These are the top 5 things people have been asking for. We've update 3 of them". Acknowledging that they haven't done everything people have been asking

That's not at all true. Lots of people ride downhill and enduro with a set of small guards. If you google images of something like Redbull Hardline pretty much all the bikes you see will have at least one front guard. That's beca

100% this. If you see someone with mudguards on a road bike it's a sign they're a proper cyclist. I don't think you're allowed to entry audax events without guards and you definitely won't be allowed on a club run w

Could it be that most people drive shorter journeys than the capacity of their cars with occasional long journeys? I know that my next will need enough range for one particular journey to a relative's house but I only do that journey o

Indeed, SQLite has got to be one of the best tested pieces of software with famously 100% test coverage. https://sqlite.org/testing.html It's amazing that a bug could exist for 16 years but it is sobering.

This is a great interview, thank you. For anyone interest there's some interesting history about BCPL (the predecessor of C), TRIPOS and engineering at Cambridge in general.

Whenever someone suggests it's OK for the police to arrest people for future crime they haven't committed I feel the need to point out that the police do not always act in the public interest. Individuals abuse their powers. e.g.

It might be worth revisiting the definition of the term "Banana Republic" and the history of the United Fruit Company[1]. Corporations have toppled democratic governments, run dodgy drug trials and given breast feeding mothers jus

Plugin solar is really cheap though. It's possible the price of an 800W kit drops to $200. That's really not a lot for something that could pay for itself in a year and keep saving you money for years to come. Then there's

I think plugin batteries are coming too. Right now (well 27th August) you can plug your inverter into a battery but you can't connect the battery to a ring main you have to connect devices directly to it. That is under assessment thoug
