I'm not missing your point, I just don't agree with it. :P If what you're suggesting were true we would have seen large numbers of EU unicorns based around gathering private data before GDPR that have somehow disappeared ..

I’m not sure. Back in the day Apple marketed macOS as a serious Unix system for scientists and engineers boasting about NASA’s use of it. I think if Apple aspired to lockdown general purpose computing they would push the ipad pro range with

If your business is dedicated to removing people’s legal right to privacy then you are probably going to break the law at some point. Why not just act ethically in the first place?

I rode King Alfred’s Way, which includes the Ridgeway, a few years ago. It is a great route but I wish I’d had larger tyres. I used 33C cyclocross tyres and it does get a bit slippery up those chalk hills when it rains. I loved it and would

It all depends on your Ruby runtime. If you want parallel threads then you can use JRuby and your threads will run in parallel on the JVM. I've used the Concurrent-Ruby gem to coordinate that[1]. It has copies of some of the Clojure d

I don't expect to have to research the bag sizes every time I fly to the same destination just because Ryanair might have made them ever so slightly smaller.

Ryanair is not straight forward, it's tricksy and only cheap if you hit the magic set of conditions that let you get the cheap deals at the cheap times. What people object to is not the no frills concept but the "ahaha you didn&#

It's because, certainly the last time I was on Ryanair, if you wanted cabin baggage the cheapest way to get it was to order Speedy Boarding.

There's surprisingly one company missing from this list; Hey/37 Signals itself. As the originators of Ruby on Rails I would expect to see here. (The list seems to include firms with 0 market cap already so it can't be based o

Where do you live and whic places do you think smartphones are a requirement for? Where I live in the UK that’s all just optional and can be replaced with a couple of plastic cards. In fact my phone ran out of data for the last 2 days while

This looks like an interesting project but it doesn't look like it's been updated in a couple of years. I'm always leery of swapping to new replacements for well established tools for this reason; what will support look like

This seems to be a small thing but it's odd to see people talking about how "Kowloon" used to exist. Kowloon still exists. Kowloon isn't the name of the Walled City, Kowloon is where the Walled City was located. You c

Expect to see someone else write a blog post on How I Used AI to fool an AI Spammer ...of course they'd probably get an LLM to write the article too.

Sorry but I don't think it's implausible at all. Outside of medical usage I think most commercial use of "titanium" is actually titanium alloys. I'm sure I read somewhere there's over 50 commercial grades so su

I can kind of see that argument but it reminds me of when a new programming language comes out and there's no IDE support for it. That definitely stops some developers from considering it, others are happy to use just a standard editor

It's worse than that, the US doesn't even use Imperial units, which was only introduced after US independence.. They use their own unique set of units that are different to both Imperial and Metric.

This is the MBA curse. Some bright spark will recognise that they can make a short term profit by cheapening the product but retaining the high price. ...but if they don't then other firms selling crappy (but "good enough")

Please stop with the cheap ageism. Whatever generation[1] you're in will be doing something out of your control that the next generation will look down on too. 1. ...and no, I'm not a Baby Boomer either.

Looking at Apple's Airpods Pro, they're starting to get some of the features of hearing aids. E.g. features to allow doorbells through the noise cancelling. I don't think anyone would suggest them as a realistic choice today

Neat idea. For some reason I thought this might be for calibrating cartridge alignment. If someone can come up with an easier way to correct that it would be amazing.

You’re comparing the time to fuel a car at home vs a dedicated fuelling station. You can’t (generally) refuel your ICE car at home. The times to recharge at a fast charge station is coming down and down.

Not sure why this is down voted. If you’re outside of the US avoiding Americanisms is important. Much like having a localised spelling checker. If I was preparing content for the US market I would probably do the opposite.

Waitrose self-checkouts point a camera at your face when pay so that you can see yourself on screen. I dislike shoplifting and petty crime but I also dislike this form of cheap, petty intimidation. I don’t want to live in this dystopia.
