Use a random number generator! http://random.irb.hr/ - a quantum RNG is online, if you get stuck on an issue then a random choice may be as good as any other if both of you are dead-set and won't budge.

For an IM web work around, I personally prefer Meebo ( http://meebo.com) since it works for Google talk, Yahoo messaging, AIM, etc. It would be nice if they have an iPhone version available.

Hist arguments for the reason consciousness isn't possible in software reminds me of the pessimists decrying the impossibility of human flight since we are not be birds.

Google just open sourced their OCR the other day, it's multi-lingual, has natural language modeling, and a plug-in system for lay-out analysis and character recognition. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/06/google-and-open-source-ocr.htm
