Ubuntu's patches for the various font rendering technologies are my #1 must-have software on Linux. Any distro I use is either a Ubuntu or something that has these patches an easy install away. (Arch has them in the AUR, for example)

For this to work, the PG role that the Rails app is using has to be a superuser, as AFAIK only superuser roles can execute CREATE EXTENSION. Does anyone consider this an issue? I have been using non-superuser roles within my Rails apps, and

I am a customer too, and I wield no torch or pitchfork, but I grow increasingly frustrated at the lack of response from Linode. I understand your point about the idea that they may be unable to speak to the issue due to law enforcement effo

That's a fair question. The title is "Why I (still) Love Perl", but the post doesn't really seem to get around to explaining that. It's not really a "Why you should use Perl instead of X" either. It seems more like, "Perl's Not Dead, It's J

Well, everyone is somewhere on the embrace-new-languages spectrum. It's clear that the people on the far edge of that spectrum have long moved on from Ruby. But there are still plenty of people further back. I'm sure we have years to come o

Awesome. This is getting added to our company chatbot's little morning news report, right next to the "days since last Java exploit" one someone posted here a couple of weeks ago.

Are there any more sites like this, for other languages or frameworks? This and others like it would be a great addition to our chatbot's morning news update. :)

What makes the Internet-required single player a deal breaker for me isn't even the launch problems (those will go away), but the fact that the game will ultimately be terminated once EA no longer finds it worthwhile to run the servers. Som

This is what I think of as the ideal HN - posts that are "How I Made X" or "How I Debugged Y" (or even "How Someone Else Made X", like the Amazon menu post, though the author ended up making their own implementation too). No product announc

Things like this are why I have DuckDuckGo as my browser's default search engine. "!amazon thingamabob" (or just "!a thingamabob"). Way more convenient than going to the homepage and worrying about search auto-focus.

Post title seems like it should be, "Refinery is a messy CMS". Seems like a good portion of these comments are comparing simple code written in (other-framework/language) with a big messy CMS written as an add-on for Rails. Hardly apples-to

That's a very compelling reason to use Python if you need those things. On the flip side, RubyGems is much bigger than PyPI and has a lot of modules that you won't necessarily find equal counterparts to in PyPI. I think there's a lot of use
