Unpoly needs no npm and I'm trying it out with Django for a rewrite of a Django+Vue app. I'm very happy with the results as it forces me to keep the business logic in the back-end, which speeds up development dramatically.

Do you really believe that fundamental research would get more investment if it were left solely to market forces?

It's close to what Clayton Christensen describes as disruptive innovation (his examples were the steel industry and radio's): incumbents are forced higher up the chain by low quality competitors ("home computers are only good

Good point :) It reminds me of "kids have no manners anymore" that has been recorded since antiquity.

To your 5th point: newer generations have not been confronted with the hardware limitations older generations had to cope with. Hence, optimization is not a skill new generations of developers are forced to learn.

I guess your last sentence answers your question. I'm sure some people had found the deleted files, but because that would before the internet was ubiquitous, it was not generally known or recorded.

If a coffee shop needs instructions from a corporate R&D center to build human connection with its customers, something's not quite right. I wonder what metrics l they will come up with for "genuine human connection".

No, that's exactly what the McNamara fallacy is about. "US Air Force Brigadier General Edward Lansdale reportedly told McNamara, who was trying to develop a list of metrics to allow him to scientifically follow the progress of the

That the system would only show you your destination, but not how to get there is very appealing to me (as well as its display). I'd pay for a CRT Waze skin and the option to turn off turn-by-turn navigation.

Seconded. T&M leads to unproductive discussions, like when you had to try out different libraries to get the job done. The client can easily ask why you didn't know library X was the best candidate before you spent time they pay fo

Everyone in Belgium above a certain age (I was born in 1974) knows it, and I bet half of them could at least name 5 characters. Update: I was once on a client mission in Rochester, NY, and when I told the people there that we are deluged wi

They forget their own history. Wasn't one of the key features of the first versions of Word that switching from WordPerfect was easy because Word used the same keyboard shortcuts?

It's also about the asset value of IP. Most if not all media companies have IP on their balance sheets. (Showing that you are) protecting IP is part of its value justification.

No love for Astro[1]? I've been using it and like its easy setup and extensibility. (I host it on Netlify with a custom domain for free and Netlify builds a new release every time I push to main). https://astro.build/

I got the same vibes. Marketing to developers who don't like marketing by pretending to be a developer who doesn't like marketing but doing almost nothing but marketing.

Your net positive is not HN's net positive. There could very well be a 100 annoyed readers for every sign-up to your waiting list. I'm not judging you, nor saying you shouldn't post about your app anymore. This is just a gene

From the docs it appears this is only for open-ended survey questions. Do any tools exist to detect suspicious behaviour for e.g. multiple choice surveys? I'm thinking of tab switching to Google for an answer for instance.

I'd say it isn't: as a developer, you are continuously making decisions that affect the user. The better you understand the user, the better your decisions will be.

I did get what we call "table beer" when eating at my grand parents, but never in school. It must have been a regional thing. Anyway, you're right that school would have been a lot better :)
