How does funneling pilots through the screening line do anything to prevent non-pilots from dressing as pilots? Real pilots ride as passengers, in full uniform, all the time. I expect the reason is even simpler than you suggest; a total lac

It could be that people are focusing on the ethics because the "meat and potatoes" of the story are stupid. The author's main point is: if you're rich and famous, people are more likely to treat you as if you're rich and famous. The author

It could be something simple. It could be that the people who decide whether Gmail is a beta or not aren't the people who decide whether Chrome is a beta or not.

In Core 2, the FSB was the CPU's main connection to the outside world, including the I/O bridges and busses and the off-chip memory controller, and thus to RAM. That's not true for i7. QPI connects to the I/O bridges and busses, but the on-

Deaths per passenger mile is the stat that air travel happens to achieve spectacular figures for, so of course it's the stat that the airlines have always touted as evidence for the safety of flying. In some ways, though, it's a silly measu

"I currently have 4+ OpenIDs..." I'm not surprised it isn't working so well for you, in that case. I think some of the centralization/privacy concerns related to OpenID sound like valid points to debate and discuss. But saying you have too

I have for years made it a habit to write "if (CONSTANT == variable)" rather than "if (variable == CONSTANT)" so that if (oh, let's be honest -- when ) I accidentally use "=" instead of "==" I'll get a big nasty compiler error. Some people

"...glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults..." is spot-on accurate. But not the way he means. Can anyone doubt that his own PC contains a fair number of photos, movies, music, games, etc? Guess what?

Alt-energy contrarians very often make the same argument: "We'll never be able to supply all power needs from renewables. Therefore the whole alt-energy movement is a doomed, loopy pipe dream." Has it ever been the goal of serious alt-e

I think this is awfully silly and superficial. Did anyone seriously expect Chrome's early, early beta to set the world on fire? It took two years for Firefox to get from its first public betas to v1.0.

If Dilbert started his own company, then Dilbert would become the pointy-haired boss, or the VC that controlled his fate would be the pointy-haired boss. And the underlings would become Dilbert. Nothing would really change. Dilbert (the com

Windows Vista supports automatic window scaling adjustments, supposedly. That probably counts as "common deployment," but I don't know if that's what he meant. I used to use the freeware "Dr. TCP" program to adjust the TCP receive window sc

"I just bought a new laptop with Vista on it. The poor puppy was spending about 10 minutes to boot up and cool down..." Vista makes a bad first impression. It gets faster the more you use it, rather than being fastest out-of-the-box. This m

The best solution is ... starting over? Really? Because Microsoft actually did that at least once, and this writer apparently missed it. They called it Windows NT. Windows Vista isn't version 12, it's NT 6.0. (Open a command prompt and see.

The fact that a person's name often makes a lousy search term is the very reason we have brands and branding, it's one of the reasons internet semi-anonymity or pseudonymhood can be so interesting and useful, and it's one reason to question
