Don't know why people would downvote this. It's a pretty good idea of how to measure the value of a company. It's somewhat shy of the true metric which would be along the lines of 'how much better it made the world'. Market cap is appealing

I think you missed my point, and that's ok. Maybe also the OP. Well, and also that I was being a little tongue-in-cheek.

I think the world could have done without this post. The reason being that while the interview question might be anywhere in 2hr-solution space, the answer is always: Make sure you understand the problem, the edge cases and present a viable

There are quite a few book sites providing good discoverability combined with community, combined with curated selections, etc. etc. You've added a nice design, but the categorization of the books is weak as is the selection itself. I looke

Nope. I suppose that you're thinking that I would be worried about the harm that my child would do to other people; that I would sympathize sufficiently with a potentially (1-P_fair_percentage) non-existent group of strangers more strongly

This is a poor response: Abusive, insulting and makes only a token effort to advance the discussion. Does the fact that it sits at the top of the page mean that it's the most highly rated? And in practical terms, it seems totally theoretica

I enjoy following these structures of cludge upon subsidy upon moral bankruptcy. I wonder at what point (in the adoption of this technology) it makes sense to invest in gun silencers.

Kind of meh that the HN commentary is 'blah blah nuclear blah blah.' There are, IMHO, other aspects to this that are actually interesting: The effectiveness of subsidy in spurring a tech sector; the importance of cultural values; concrete r

A well written article; interesting enough in spite of not having any quotable sources. A more accurate title might have been "Reuters shut-out; Facebook IPO bankers remain mum"

There's nothing about the size of the government that limits or enhances it's power to act in the best interest of its citizenry. (You've thrown a red herring in there.) What we clearly see is that government's determination that it's simpl

This idea to kill Hollywood is ridiculously misguided. There's nothing terribly wrong with Hollywood; I mean, it has a somewhat facile outlook that goes along with championing the individual over the enterprise - but this isn't the worst bi

I don't know why you'd apologize for putting this in a larger context; not doing that risks making the win Pyrrhic. SOPA and PIPA aren't end-game plays, they're simply tactics in the ongoing culture war. Recent events, from Wikileaks to Ano

The visualization itself is sort of interesting, but the good part is the story of developing it: A bug via code-reuse; performance issues in Ruby; and fast code in C. Oh, also that Stackato compiled his C on deployment, that, I thought was

The decision, the process and the background are an embarrassment. It's interesting to me that there isn't even the slightest bit of damage control. What was it Lou Reed said ... Stick a fork in 'em. Turn 'em over. They're done.
