I still don't understand why half the threads on HN talk about how there's not as much work anymore due to automation, and the other half talk about how people are overworked and working longer hours. We can't have UBI becaus

I need the last paycheck. So I'm sticking it out to the end of the month. But if I don't get fired, I'm going to ask for a leave of absence, or quit. But I'm still worried about what happens next. Rent in my city is expe

I'm struggling to get away from being a developer. I left a comfortable, but low-paying job because there was no future and no promotions or job changes in sight. I want to work with people, not code. I hate being by myself in front of

This sounds like the plot of the book Wringer, but I never imagined it was a thing in real life. Really?

I think a lot of my age group would be happy to buy such houses if there were any available. Where I'm from there are none, and if there are, they still sell for over half a million.

I'm going to be pursuing a degree in Environmental Management with a specialty in Waste Management in Denmark next year. Really excited to be stepping away from software development and into this exciting and growing field :D

I'd love to work construction. But every time I've mentioned it to my family they tell me about how it will destroy my knees and back, I'll lose fingers, get hearing damage, head injuries, and the pay is crap compared to the

There are other alternatives. Money isn't only kind of compensation that counts. Once I've covered my expenses - food, housing, transport (that can be public transport if I'm in an area where it's adequate), and medical,

The pumps at gas stations for cars have automatic backflow cutoff valves. I wonder why this technology isn't available for trains?

Personally I think there are more people than you think who would be perfectly happy to clean toilets as their contribution, so long as they were compensated fairly for it.

You have to decide for yourself how much you can tolerate and still respect yourself. I'd have made the same choice as OP, and because I know that about myself, I keep fuck-off money in my bank account in case I ever need to take a sta

I'm personally glad that HN is not a complete echo chamber and that multiple points of view can surface to the top. Do you find it a problem that the thousands of people who read this site don't all share a consistent philosophy?

Yeah, exactly. Psychopaths don't empathize, so they don't understand why social conventions exist, so they sometimes get it wrong and something seems "off". When someone seems "off" you don't trust them.
