There are more options than "just serve the images" and "bloated monstrosity that takes so long to load on mobile that I actively avoid imgur links". For example, they could have, but didn't, make it a page with adv

In the UK, when exchanges moved to digital, they deliberately kept the old behaviour because some people relied on it (eg, hanging up their main phone, then walking to another room and picking up the call on an extension phone), with a time

In my experience I'm more likely to be running more inefficient algorithms, wasting more processor cycles, or transferring more data in general if I do upgrade software than if I don't.

Assuming these people 10000 lightyears away from the black hole are also on a planet, their reference frame is almost the same as ours - the relative speed of different planets is very small compared to the speed of light. So they'll a

The description in the article is vague and I can't find any information elsewhere, but the reference to the functionality depending on which metal is used for the inner cylinder makes me think that it's actually a voltaic cell us

I agree. And if I "forgot" to unclick a checkbox somewhere it's almost certainly because the website used some dark pattern to make it easy to get wrong.

To paraphrase stuff from Scott Aaronson that I can't find right now: The currently known laws of physics say yes, and nobody's proposed any new laws of physics consistent with current observations which say no and don't allow

I think having multiple exit points is good when the early exits are all at the beginning for trivial parameter validation, but likely to be bad if they're buried in the middle of the function. In either case, there's the disadvan

60 frames per second is because (in the USA) electricity suppliers standardised on 60Hz mains frequency, and in the early days of TV it was easiest to make the refresh rate match the mains supply. (In the UK the mains frequency is 50Hz, as

Actions in Magic: the Gathering let you create "tokens" which are like cards but aren't limited in number. Although you can only have a finite number in any given game, there's no upper bound on how many you can have.

Yes, terminals could be a lot faster. A major advantage that often seemed to be overlooked in the rush from terminals to web pages is that if you pressed a key that took you to the next screen, your next keypresses would be queued up and th

The terms you're looking for are "single compilation unit" or "unity build". It's used sometimes, I think mostly to help the compiler optimise better. Build times for a full rebuild may be faster, but may not,

Something that comes up moderately often in low-level stuff is: You have a bunch of objects, defined in different files, and no code is aware of what the complete list of objects is. You want to iterate over an array of all these objects. H

From TFA: let _rows = sql_query("SELECT * FROM users WHERE username=?", &[username]); The statement is static, but the [username] part is not, it's just a variable that can have whatever username you want.
