Lumia will get WinPhone 7.8 which includes all the UI updates but leaves out the features which requires more advanced hardware.

As a Windows user now I have to decide between a 720p WindowsPhone8 phone or the Windows 8 RT ARM tablet.

Its not entirely a start over from scratch. Every WP7 app will work going forward. I do agree with the move though. Its better than having a bunch of old phones running WP8 with a poor experience.

People would damn MS either way. They could've updated older WP7 devices only to have them run slow and have newer apps not work correctly due to missing hardware features. As a developer, that'd be nightmare to support.

Microsoft is already eating RIMs lunch without a buy out. A lot of RIM's enterprise software is tailor written for the old BBOS and wouldn't do MS a lot of good.

I think what is great about the Surface line is that now other OEMs will have to design and produce even better hardware to compete. This is very good news for the consumer.

I used to have an auto-reboot app that scheduled hard resets to free memory and reduce crashes. So glad to be off that platform now.

I think the bigger realization is that with cloud services pushing to become commonplace that the personal computers we use are just appliances. Use them until they break, discard. Wasteful? Very. Edit: Don't downvote because you hate it. I

Yep, in a recent QuakeCon he stated that he's more passionate now and having more fun now than ever. Great guy.

I had that weird/awesome realization moment yesterday after seeing all these x86 tablets and arm laptops all running Win8 / Win8RT. Lines are getting quite blurry, its a great time to be a tech consumer.

Agreed. All the hate is unnecessary. Give it 5 minutes before pilling on Yahoo and the past decisions of it's board. The idea of taking browsing with you is nice feature that Im suprised hasn't been implemented so well by other operating sy

This may be a result of some pressure for the online services division to start turning a profit as they are MS's largest money pit at the moment.

I'm home now running both the SkyDrive app and the LiveMesh app which itself has cloud storage. I think MS needs to clear things up as both services have serious overlap and will cause consumer confusion... even if that mean removing cloud

I would say Windows Mesh is more a competitor than SkyDrive because its folder sync and online storage capacity. Neither are getting anywhere near as much traction as DropBox, but it would do MS good to merge these services asap. Threat? No

These type of doom and gloom speculation articles are completely unnecessary. We're 5 months out and given that MS has stated that all WP8 apps will run on Win8, they're looking at ~100K apps in some form out of the gate.

Saved my allowance to buy a TI-86 graphing calculator a year before I would need it in school just so I could program in class. A Z80 @ 4mhz, it provided so many skills early on with effiency. Good times. EDIT: Oh, and back before there wer

"Specially customized their phones"? If you mean specially designed the phones to be efficient at every day tasks, then you are correct. Don't get all bent out of shape because of your loathing of Microsoft.

Hasn't chip stacking been the future of computers for 10 years? Especially of SoC solutions.

Charging extra for a mandatory peice is unacceptable to me. Buying the system, with a 32gb memory card and a AAA game is going over $400 american. For a handheld with a sub par browser that just doesn't make sense.

I think that is completely opposite of the employees at Mojang. They promote a fun, take money off the table and make great games atmosphere. If people would rather ski than make games, then they wouldn't work there.

Hopefully we can get this into drivers sooner than later. AMD has already been working with Microsoft to get a large performance gain out of BullDozer chips in Windows 8 simply by the way threads are prioritized.
