Your sample is heavily skewed toward the literate. Add Education (None,HighS,BS,MS,PhD) as a research statistic and compare it to the national average. I would bet that your sample is greater than 2 Standard Deviations from the mean.

The great thing about distributed caches is that static resources can still be made available even if the source is down. In fact dynamic resources can be served as well using the stale-if-error Cache-Control header. http://tools.ietf.org/

Actually, PHP returns a 200 when it encounters a fatal error. This explains why it was indexed by Google.

Looks like PHP returns a 200 when it encounters a fatal error. Edit: Here's a way to force 500 for fatal errors in PHP http://blog.kevburnsjr.com/php-fatal-error-500

I suppose you could add some code to Varnish to tell it to squelch any and all 500 responses.

I suppose you could also write a quick bash script to ensure the first 5 characters of any .class.php file matches "<?php", but it wouldn't be very generally applicable and wouldn't fix a problem like this for a file named config.php

+1 to russ. PHP syntax checking on precommit would have caught this. Edit: I'm wrong. It does not catch this.

Well, this is partially true. The output clearly contains error statements, but this directive would not have stopped the first 748 lines of sensitive information from leaking before the first error.

Working on ways around this. Reason for lag right now is that iPhone requires that play events come from a UI event rather than any arbitrary javascript function call. To get one-click play on the homepage, you have to load all 40 players o
