I'm not sure how the system works, but I think it's safe to assume that the user needs to have enabled their microphone first for this to work.

I had someone invade the League of Legends account I used for almost a decade after me not using it for a year or so and cheat to their hearts content. That caused the account to get permanently banned with absolutely zero help from Riot Ga

I've wanted a pipeline operator in JavaScript for a while now. Working with Elm and Elixir has made me think of problems in terms of data transformation, and the pipeline operator is the biggest reason why. "Take X then do Y, Z, J

I don't. Just a few hours ago I noticed I started getting a bunch of guitar-related ads (like courses) after searching last night for a list of all the existing Guitar Hero guitars.

It has to be. I've seen so many people making huge sums of money selling NFTs for machine-generated "art". What value does this provide to anyone? Who is buying this? What are they getting out of it? This entire thing feels l

It's unbelievable that to some, the solution to the high crime rate in Brazil is putting more people in jail when a significant part of our prison population hasn't even been tried for their crimes yet. It's always shocking t

Discord is the reason I'm a software engineer. I joined back in 2015 and after a few months of usage I had an idea for a bot, which prompted me to learn programming and develop it. I did so, and eventually my little bot was in over 150

I disagree. In my opinion those tools are the bare minimum for effective moderation, and while I love that Discord gives developers an API that allows them to implement those systems, I think it's something that should be handled by Di

What I think happened, as someone who's been using Discord daily since 2015, is that they came up with a slightly better product than the alternatives, spent enough in marketing (to gamers specifically) to convince investors that it wa

I think you misread my comment. I definitely prefer Discord over the others, but I still think it has a long way to go before it becomes a chat experience that's not insufferable to use.

Could marketing not be the reason people loved it, or the reason it was allowed to reach the point where it became lovable?

It's definitely improved over the years, but every remotely populated server I'm in uses bots for basic moderation features like ban words, proper bans/kicks (for example, temporary bans), warns, etc. There's still a lon

I don't see how that's relevant? I don't even prefer those over Discord, but I don't think it's enough of an improvement to warrant the market share it has now.

I can't think of many reasons Discord "ate the whole market" besides smart marketing, honestly. It does audio rooms incredibly well, but everything else (even their developer support team) is just terrible.

Nix is primarily a package management tool, yes, but it provides isolation in the sense that you don't have to globally install anything (except for Nix, of course). A tool I use extensively when developing is a "nix shell",
