The cynicism we see is a product more of the boredom of an upbringing in white suburban affluence. Some peoples’ lives in the past half-century were devoid of the struggles of other times and places. Lacking any contrast for anchoring, that

If you continuously call all politicians equally corrupt, they have no incentive not to be. You and the people you influence will have no justification based in reality for the decisions you get to make, like voting. That’s the end of democ

This is indeed something I've noticed. The discussion about browser engines seems to draw heavily on late-90s folklore while entirely missing the point: browser engines today are extremely easy to work with, in the sense that it'

Photosynthesis is fascinating for how inefficient it is. And slow. Usually, when you look up some enzyme's rate of reaction you realize it's operating at a speed drastically higher than what you were imagining. DNA synthesis? 10,0

In strictly economic terms, it rarely makes sense for all but the largest users of some upstream project, putting that proposition squarely in tragedy-of-the-commons territory: it’s better to hope for others to support it. That applies even

0.98 ^ 40 = 0.445. But that’s income in the last year, not fraction of the total. You’d have to add up 1 + 0.98 + 0.98^2… to get that, but I’m too stupid to figure out a closed formula or anything else I can solve with the Google calculator

Have you heard of asking for a raise? Also, last I checked, the price of essential good in Bitcoin, assuming the contra-factual that it were possible to buy such things with Bitcoin, hasn’t exactly been constant for 40 years.

This presents sponsorship of OSS in strictly economic terms as a trade-of. That’s unlikely to be a successful argument for more sponsorship, because it puts it squarely in tragedy-of-the-commons territory: unless you’re the largest consumer
