How else to you answer stuff like "how to compare strings in bash" if not with a code example?

My point is that you can't tell, because people adapt. You could come to the same conclusion about people without Internet access and then come to the conclusion that we should ban Internet access, because people without it are happier

Yes, people adapt. I'm saying you can't look at someone and determine whether how things are for them are good, just because they look fine. An animal raised in captivity looks fine, but maybe it would be better if it was raised i

I learned English in about a year after having failed to make any progress in ten odd years of learning the language formally through school. The secret sauce is (1) completely ignore grammar, (2) never have your mistakes corrected and (3)

No, that is a movie lie. You can learn stuff during total immersion, but you can also learn nothing while being totally immersed. It doesn't affect your learning.

You need zero teachers if kids are motivated and have access to the Internet. All teachers have done in my schoollife could easily be replaced by playing back a video.

Shrinking tabs are awful, though, when you keep 500 to 1500 tabs open. Not that I'd do something like that..

If you put someone into a situation that isn't optimal, they generally have the means to adapt and not look disadavantaged. This is true for caged animals and humans that lost some of their rights. If you do it slowly enough, you can s

Owning guns is a right, and imho it should rank higher than education.

As an attacker who wants to go unnoticed a knife is the better option. As a defender, who wants to stop an attacker, your best bet is a gun, since you don't have to get close.

I remember Prime costing $20 per year. Then Prime Video was introduced and the price went up and up. I canceled.

As far as I remember there's Google, there's Bing, something that only works with Chinese, something that only works with Russian, search engines that barely work at all and a bunch of meta search engines, that use Google or Bing

You obviously neither know what the backfire effect is nor why you should engage in open debates, anyway. I've talked to people believing in god before, so I know what it's like to talk to a wall. And I've talked to flat-eart

..so just challenge them when confronted. Flat earth stuff is intelectual inquiry and not a loaded question like your example about squirrels. It can be easily proved wrong, so just do it.

Why should flat-earth or anything ridiculous be shouted down? If it's as ridiculous as you think it is, it should be trivial to win any debate. The reason people shout down heretic ideas is because they are true, so they have no choice
