Is it a business model? How much would I have to pay to use a restroom that’s been kept spotless by a well-paid, well-protected maintainer? What would it take to prevent the worst abuses and misuse by paying patrons (flinging, smoking, assi

This is basically the premise of the oddly compelling 2019 Spanish sci-fi/horror film, The Platform . Prisoners alternately experience privilege and deprivation, and it either makes them animals or socialists. Lots of food for thought

Look how many comments here are top level with no replies! I don't think I have ever seen anything quite like it in many years of HN-ing. What does it mean? I suppose people are immediately identifying with OP and posting their own per

I feel your pain. Just mothballed the X220 for a Surface Pro X and a Nuphy 60% low profile mechanical keyboard. I guess I'll make a custom wrist rest to match the X220 geometry. It's mainly for staying in touch while traveling.

Thanks. Tried some searches, good stuff. Recipes are a well known disaster area these days, it's nice to be able to find just an explanation and instructions, with nothing else.

I really enjoy posting sites that seem to meet this vague standard, and it's just plain fun when a discussion emerges. Example deleted.

Cool. How? Can you elaborate on "I crawl myself." Do you mean you are the search engine and your search engine is an index of stuff you found that fits your criteria? What criteria, precisely?

“Drone” is a perfect name for these wee, buzzy, soulless, robotic horrors… Thanks to its big eyes, a drone spots a queen in the melee. It zeroes in and grabs her. Mating is completed in less than 5 seconds, during which the drone’s endop

I’m trying to imagine how many people have done any degree of “table stakes” background reading on Conrad, and read more than HoD in 7th grade, even among HN super-achievers (the name Nostromo notwithstanding), and feel confident co

There’s a high standard of harm for libel of public figures — knowingly false plus actual malice, iirc. Seems more likely it’s just bad at these details. How would you test it, since it’s not going to have sufficient or reliable source data

I liked the Crawick Multiverse by Charles Jencks, located south of Glasgow. Sort of like this City thing, but smaller, more varied, much more accessible, and most importantly, cool, green and inviting. It’s like he designed it for humans,
