Interesting. I had an internship at a company that did inertial navigation, mostly for defence applications. I only knew of ring lasers for use in gyroscopes. (Send a laser around a loop wave guide/fiberoptic, and any translational

In theory, yes. In practice, no. At my previous job, I wrote a short Python script that took /usr/dict/words and gzipped it and also converted to UTF-16LE (inserting a null byte before every character) and gzipping that. T

No subfield matches, no comparisons other than == and != on the whole field, and only works with deterministic encryption... so leaks like a sieve under many threat models.

I believe text is their only reliable way to update the model's internal state in a way that reliably transfers information. (Its internal state is a black box.) I presume they feed in the prompt and dump internal state to disk, rath

There's a scam where two people go into a store and pretend not to know each other. One gets change from the other, but doesn't have the correct change. They then get the cashier involved to help with the "problem" by

I was developing trading systems at Goldman then. I remember that day. I got a call that evening to come in early the next day to discuss additional preventions and mitigations to implement. Scarier was the day I put out a change request

Note that the railing has to be high enough that even with the swaying of the boat, it's not going to hit you below your center of mass. A lot of boat railings aren't tall enough.

I have some sympathy for Mitnick. My understanding is that most of the damage he caused was due to opportunity cost and direct costs of catching him, at a time when a direct path into a security career was less obvious.

In the late 1990s/early 2000s, I used TWM because it was light weight, and easily customizable to have 1 px borders on windows (and no bar at the top) to maximize my screen real estate. Java Swing and TWM interacted poorly, so when Li
