The audio version of Neal Stephenson's "REAMDE" has our hero saving data in a "ee em ay see ess file." But really, nobody ever says things like "I need a dedicated Linux box running Apache with a MySQL back end" outside of an Aaron Sorkin s

Black could avoid the mate by sacrificing his rook with h1+, then promoting the pawn with a check, then sacrificing the new queen by taking the knight at e5. No point in that though. He has lost.

I think it is a stretch to call "and" a skeuomorph. If a skeuomorph exists, it exists in Boolean algebra, because that is the word George Boole used.

Back in the olden days I was a pressman for a newspaper. We would grab the newspapers coming off the press, and hold them upside down to check the print quality, color registration, etc. This was almost necessary to see errors, not beca

Yes, and the paper distinguishes between programming and coding. Step one is "Analysis and Programming", step two is "Coding." It's step two that FORTRAN virtually eliminates.

It occurs to me that HFS might be the real culprit. A lot of the bad behaviors described here involve heavy disk use. John Siracusa has a nice round-up of all the HFS faults: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.a..

Many people had color monitors in the 1980s. For values of "monitors" that include television sets. The Commodore 64 and Vic 20 were color, as was the Tandy CoCo. Lots of others as well.

Yet another way to do this is to use "/bin/echo" instead of the builtins or printf. "/bin/echo" is part of POSIX.
