This is one of the reasons I find microbes so incredibly fascinating. If you can find a niche, there is likely to be some sort of bacterium setting up shop there. Furthermore, practically any carbon source has some oddball microbe who sees

Philly now has a 2% sales tax as well. The hits just keep on comin!

I most certainly do object to Philly's high taxes. I was merely making the point that you can't even point to decent city services as a positive for enduring high taxes (something you most definitely can do in some other high-tax areas).

I did factor it in when deciding whether or not to take the job. In the end, I calculated I would be saving a bit on federal taxes because I would be using regional rail instead of driving (and thus paying for transportation with pre-tax mo

No, the issue is I went from working and living in the suburbs to working in the city. For doing that, I pay an additional 2% in taxes on top of my local (suburban) tax of 1%. The wage tax on non-Philly residents is ~3% and my local municip

The wage tax is really obnoxious. I essentially took a pay cut just by taking a job in the city. As you say, it would be easier to swallow if things felt more like Sweden and less like Detroit.

This is on display right around Philadelphia. As soon as you cross the border into neighboring areas, you notice businesses all over the place. Philadelphia has a number of big employers who can't easily relocate including a number of unive

I sat on a jury in a case that involved allegations of rape. One constant refrain from the nurses who examine rape victims is that there is often little to no physical trauma even when there has been a struggle. Furthermore, except in cases

This is the reason I like to use jQuery: I would never have time to take on all the headaches with supporting some of these platforms. I use jQuery so I don't have to worry about all that stuff and I can get my work done.

There's lots of great advice here. I've got a 10-week old girl who I'm certain is the cutest, most wonderful little thing in the world. I'm assuming you're the dad (if you're the mom, I can't offer much). Stuff to think about right now : -

I agree. I keep it on because I worry that the auto-correct is going to substitute a really unfortunate word for what I intend and I won't catch it when proofreading.

This is an exceptionally well-written piece. It's a great window into why you need to be on guard when getting your science news from breathless press releases.

Having never used a Blackberry, I never realized how much people make use of this feature. I wonder if Apple might eventually include an indicator similar to the sleep/power indicator on a MacBook.

I think it would be good to also limit by karma score too. It's trivial for someone to come here and create an account. I'm not sure what the cutoff should be, but probably low enough so as not to exclude people unnecessarily, but high eno

I think there are a lot of site owners who make the mistake of thinking that SSL is only about encryption. They see these certs as a way to prevent data snooping. It's easy to see when a browser doesn't show a little lock icon or warns abou

Your statement is correct, but doesn't tell the whole story. The issue is that Apple's relationship with its customers is simple: we make stuff, you give us money for it. Google's model is more complex: we make stuff, you get it free, but y

Google has made no secret of the fact that they designed Android as a hedge against MS control of the mobile landscape. It wasn't until Apple came out of nowhere with the iPhone that they had to set their sights on both targets. Ballmer sho

I found the part about yubikey to be the most interesting. I was not previously aware of it. What a fantastic alternative to the standard RSA LCD display key. The implementation as a keyboard is pure genius.

I suspect that a problem inherent in many organization's data is that the semantics are often the thorniest part of the integration process. So the "translation layer" that is described by Mr. Fayyad in the article is no small undertaking.
