In my experience, accountants want to capitalize software development costs (makes the bottom line look better) but must expense maintenance (i.e., bug-fixing). So that translates to a (slight?) preference for quality software that has fewe

I'm with you. If I want to subtotal and subtract one subtotal from another, I'm popping over to excel. But... columnar text is a big win.

I've been slowly getting more and more into org over the years (decades, really). It's nice to just have a simple little text mode that results in easily readable text. Good for brainstorming and scribbling notes. Everything else

"Python was a niche language"? What niche were you in in 2002? Java was going great guns and Pascal/Delphi were definitely a thing. Or are you just saying "a pox on all statically-typed houses"?

In my experience, "biodegradable" plastic requires high-temperature industrial composting and still generates toxic breakdown components.

No. Liquid H2 is incredibly fluffy. You get more H's (and crackable bonds) in hydrocarbons, as elsewhere discussed.

(1) Trust your instincts. Really listen to that inner voice. (2) I forget. No wait! I remember! Be really careful who you have kids with (see item (1)). Most mistakes you can walk away from, but when an innocent human life (or two) is invol

I don't see the argument for pointers. If you want C++, use C++. Re checked exceptions: they're great. Document how your code can go off the rails or prevent it.

"the ecosystem" The truly great thing about java is sun somehow created an ecosystem, a community. Probably by leading with specs, always, and not implementing anything but the core. So, you wind up with a real marketplace and a

How did RSS go downhill? Other commenters in here have mentioned their readers of choice; I can add mine: NewsBlur. Turns out RSS is still in pretty common use, as far as I can tell, unless you can point to a handful of sites that aren'
