I'm of the same mind as the author. I can't think of a single online service that would be worth the risk of exposing myself to age or identity verification.

The average isn't terribly meaningful because it's so heavily skewed by a small number of obscenely wealthy people. The median net worth of 50-something Americans is $180,227. https://www.empower.com/the-currency&#

True, I can ignore them, but they're still a distraction and impact performance. For the use cases that I want the old Notepad for, Notepad++ isn't a great alternative for me.

Slightly more offensive to me. Not a lot more offensive, though, that's true.

> If someone is being forced by an AI to be polite to you, is it really still basic human politeness? No. That does strip the meaning out of it. I also object to Burger King's proposal. But at least it's still coming from an ac

As a customer, I'd find that actively offensive. Those pre-ordering recordings asking if I'm using an app are already horrible enough as it is. Offloading basic human politeness to machines would be even worse.

I don't find Notepad++ to be a good replacement for (the old) notepad, personally. It's too feature-filled. The big win of notepad was that it was genuinely minimalist.

I use Dokuwiki: https://www.dokuwiki.org/ I access it when I'm out and about, but do so through a VPN that I also run from my home. The wiki is not accessible except through the VPN. Organizationally, I have a differen

Any machine that has to talk to a server I don't control or, worse, requires a human to monitor and take control every so often, is entirely unsuitable for use in my home.

At least the ones in my area are substantially worse than they used to be. They don't have a lot of items they used to carry, and the ones they do carry have a much more limited selection than they used to. But perhaps, as another comm

It's certainly not the best of all time. Goodreads' user base appears to have a pretty narrow demographic, though, so I don't think that any general conclusions can be drawn from opinion polls of them.

The backlash against ICE isn't primarily about deportations. It's about ICE engaging in murder, cruelty, unnecessary violence, torture, racism, and the like towards everyone, citizen or otherwise.

Accepting that, for the sake of argument, genAI will become self-aware and replace humans, that replacement will not be human. Therefore, such an AI would not be the continuation of humanity. Humanity would be dead and gone.

What I've noticed is that used CD prices have been increasing by quite a lot (at least enough for me to find it irritating). That tells me that demand for them has increased noticeably.

Except that despite those codes on plastic packaging, almost no plastic packaging gets recycled. Most of what you put in the recycling bin just ends up in the landfill. The plastics industry has been scamming us on this point for years.

Short answer: it's too expensive. But us hobbyists can help out. I get about half of my electronic components for free or close to free by parting out electronics that others are throwing away or sending to e-waste centers.
