It is very confusing because typically the previous generation’s i7 performs the same as the current gen’s i5, within the same tdp tier, and i5’s from a higher tdp can vastly outperform i7’s from a lower tdp within the same generation. Typi

Reminds me of this story of a civil servant who was told to stay home until called, fired 5 years later when they discovered he had been paid all that time without working, ordered to pay back those 5 years of wages, fought it in court for

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem being described, but I just tried this and it is impossible for me to type so fast in the iphone calculator app that it misses inputs. The animation completes in the background but does not block

When I use spatial audio on my 2019 ipad it works like that. If I move my head to the side for a while, it "reorients", and now the audio comes from a point in the air next to the ipad.

I'm sort of disappointed by the pricing. The base model is ok, but the higher price tiers add way too little to justify their price bump. You'll be hanging a dock or dongle off the back anyway with so few ports, so I only see valu

Also, those mines are heavily subsidized, basically $80K per year in subsidies / tax breaks per miner. Effectively they're being paid a government wage to keep mining. What you're seeing here is a large section of the populat

And then address the problem on the demand side through regulation and treatment programs etc. rather than prohibition. Why do that at the end? Start by treating drug addicts as patients to be treated instead of criminals to be punished,

Chesterton’s fence as applied to software: don’t replace a bad software solution until you understand why it is that way. Still, looking back we can see how software solutions were not optimal for their age, and how amazing things can be co

For me it is a lot about changing expectations. I used to use ecco pro for my notetaking. I loved it, it was very powerful and focused and it let me capture my ideas very effectively. Today I use onenote, which as an outliner sort of sucks.

Not exactly an example, but the pharma industry has shown a complete lack of interest in pursuing phage therapy, even though it could help solve the problem of antibiotic resistance, because phages cannot be patented.

Yes, exactly that. I got onto windows phone with 8.0 and it was very nice to use even if app support was lacking. I steadily saw it decline. 8.1 took away much of what made it unique in the hope of getting better app support ( narrator: it

As a technical team lead I’ve struggled more than once with the trade off between getting meaningful deep work done for myself and getting others on with their work. Over the years I’ve come to realize it is not as clear cut of a trade off.

We always seem to look at tech as if it is a thing unto itself, instead of a catalyst and enabler. Every industry is transformed by technology, but it remains fundamentally about the same thing. There was still a transportation industry aft

But that’s just because managing software development is about managing people, and the behavior of people can’t be captured by logical rules. In other words, I doubt that there is something that can or even should be solved here. I think t

A linux fanboy would argue that your problem wasn’t linux, it was proprietary software that vendors won’t port to linux. They might also argue that your team should not choose software which is so restrictive. For me though it boils down to

Web apps won because they didn’t need to be installed on the device. They were vastly inferior to desktop apps built with any framework (even java), but they were “good enough” and IT departments liked them because they were easy to deploy.
