The whole mentality of 996 goes back to the time when most of the jobs were manufacturing jobs. If you are a garments factory whats the simplest way to increase throughput? Well, make your workers work harder. That doesn’t really work exc

Sort of reminds me how I can’t get a digital newspaper without ads, regardless of what I’m willing to pay, or how every cable tv provider in my region has unskippable ads in on demand and (soon) recorded tv programs, regardless of what I pa

Do also take into account that the median wage in the US is only around 35K per year. Clearly most americans are not in line for a 6 figure salary, nor will they ever be.

Isn’t it rather reductionist to say that the closed nature of iOS is why people buy it? I chose iphone because a string of bugs left a sour taste in my mouth with android, and inertia locked me in. I definitely don’t want this level of lock

Microsoft tried and failed to make a third alternative and force competition, spending billions to make it happen. As they found out, app makers don’t want to build for yet another platform. It doesn’t matter whether you make an awesome mob

Android does the CSAM image scanning on the server if you sync your photos to the cloud. On iphone if you don’t use icloud there is no scanning. I would call that “same difference”. If you’re running stock android you’re running a closed OS

I don’t have to watch the coverage to also know they’re not going to talk about the wider context in any useful way. No real insight into why the taliban saw so little opposition, no discussion of how drug money underpins much of their powe

Won’t fix can be such a trap as well because it doesn’t make the problem go away but signals to the users “we don’t care so go away”. The issue that pushed me off of android was tagged as wontfix, and doesn’t seem to be solved despite a dec

Apple can do anything they want on every iphone, always have, and always will. Whether this feature exists or not changes that in no way, their technical ability to snoop through everyone’s stuff is the same. So far they’ve shown restraint

I use syncthing. Open source peer to peer folder sync. There is no cloud copy, but for me this is a feature, and the rare times I want to share a file with someone else I manually upload it to cloud storage (onedrive or gdrive). https:

What is the value in keeping all this stuff around in tabs to look at later? If it is important, you will see it again and it is not necessary to put it on a todo list of tabs to read later. If it is not important it is just more busy work.

I may be wrong, but this is how I understand it. The propellers push against the wind. Effectively you’re creating a faster wind by pushing back at it. The energy that drives the propellers still comes indirectly entirely from the wind, but

Individual action won’t solve this problem. We need to leave the fossil fuels in the ground, which means switching energy sources, which is not something individuals have much influence on. Reducing energy use at the individual level is goo

An ice age is a global temperature difference of about 5 degrees. So we are going to have at least a third of an ice age’s temperature delta in heating, if we do everything right, and two thirds if we do business as usual.

There are apps that cater to comic book fans, are they promoting the comic nerd divide? What is wrong with a service that caters to a content niche? Separate but equal is only a bad thing when people cannot choose which of the two systems t
