Not too long ago, I went down a rabbit hole of specifying GHA yaml via dhall, and quickly hit some problems; the specific thing I was starting with was the part I was frustrated with, which was the "expresssions" evaluation stuff.

To me, the issue comes when something weird is going on in CI that isn't happening locally, and you're stuck debugging it with that typical insanity. Yeah, it may be that you'll get the exact same versions of things installed

Ditto! I've never heard of "Standard Oil of New Jersey" myself.

Thank you to whoever changed the title to omit the question mark. Question marks at the end of non questions drives me crazy. I’ve tried to accept it and accustom myself to it, but I still always trying to parse it multiple times

Nice. I recently have been doing a bash deep dive and realizing that treating it like repl driven development is very useful. Been wondering if this is worth writing about for others. You can also just execute another ‘bash’ process, of cou

I, too, recoil at displays of arrogance, needing to spend time communing with nature from a barrel. Tho I haven’t started on my exploratory instrument crafting era.

Neat. I’ve done some kinda sorta similar stuff with org mode in emacs. I really like it, but it does just make me long for a system with built in tracking, automatic synthesis of current focus from programs in use, etc. Imagine something li

I do get your point, and generally think it makes sense, but in this case it seems extremely relevant: There is a global competition for intellectual capital, and at the moment, the US' position here seems at the very least uncertain,

CL is not particularly functionally oriented. Many things like this are absent (or present, in some cases).

I have also wished such a thing existed, something like genius.com but for literature (I know there are some works of literature on there, but for numerous reasons its not a perfect match). Sometimes I end up looking at commentary on a work

Reminds me of Foucault's Pendulum. Great book, worth reading, and extremely relevant to our day.

Interesting. I can’t speak to how it works in other countries; in the USA so much context is loaded into home ownership. I don’t know the Japanese “sticks and carrots”. The one factor I could imagine is if cost of land is so expensive that

I mean, it’s not a foregone conclusion that you’ll do better than otherwise. You could buy when prices are high and sell when prices are low. There is an ongoing calculus also about how long you need to live in a house before you end up sav

This is wild. If what you said is true, then there would be no appreciable value to be extracted by flippers. Their entire schtick is built around what you are saying being untrue. I’m sure you have reasons for believing this, but I cannot

the reasons are myriad. Because in a general way you can't say "I want X that will work perfectly until time Y". Instead, Xs are made my a process. That process can cost more or less: more meaning better quality ingredients,

I think this is the key. As a generally smart person with disposable income, I am unable to figure out how to find/purchase higher quality products that are not optimized for obsolescence. Increasingly it seems that _everything_ is as

It’s such a different thing entirely, the question of replication doesn’t make sense. See my other comment. I think you’d be better served by trying to understand how psychological research has been done, why people go on about replication,

So basically this study is “we looked at various publicly available data sets of information, and here is a thing we notice that has previously gone unnoticed”. The noticed it in multiple datasets. What would replication look like here besi

I haven’t read htdp, but I looked through it. It seemed more of a “teach to program” than a “teach you to think about programs at a whole new level”. But HTDP didn’t exist when I was working on sicp.

I'm sure you've gotten a lot of good feedback, but a personal message for your kid: I am well into my adulthood, but I started programming from a similar place way back when. I was probably 12-13 when I was self-studying HTML/

I developed my love of programming originally from learning PHP, C, C++. I lost it at uni trying to solve problems in Java, which was mutable state hell and made solving the most boring stuff infuriatingly boring/full of stupid busywor
