A few hasty, disconnected thoughts about slow-motion: 1) Back in the day, you'd use slowmo if you wanted to make something look bigger and more impressive, like scale model work or making a human-sized person look like a giant[0]. Mayb

Writing machine code without an assembler and having to reload everything from cassette every time it errored felt... sort of fun but also extremely frustrating. I think most actual commercial software was written on hardware that was out

I think your struggle with shifting meanings is a worthwhile one. At least, if you said BB King was an R&B artist, and somebody tried to correct you, you'd be within your rights to stand your ground. But particularly with regard to

The point, I think, is that that The Post Office acted like part of the state, notably in that they acted like an unconstrained branch of the CPS in bringing prosecutions against thousands of people. > Maybe in some fringe circles I woul

"Deep state" is, or at least to be, a perfectly respectable political term for bodies that retain power across changing governments.

On the one hand that's awesome and it's really great to have a contribution! On the other hand, I unfortunately just added it myself. But it's there now, anyway :-) More PRs very welcome if you're in the mood!

Just finishing the London indie cinemas is an ongoing challenge! But yeah it'd be great to branch out to other places, and cover other types of events.

I just took a fortnight off work with the intent of getting away from my laptop, but accidentally ended up making a listings site for London's independent / arts cinemas. As far as I can tell no such thing currently exists, and I

This is kind of an irrelevant (and doubtless unoriginal) shower thought here but, if humans are judging the AI to be human much more often than the human, surely that means the AI is not faithfully reproducing human behaviour.

It's slightly more forgivable because at least the text is supposed to be editable, but Azure tickets also have this middle-click issue. It's infuriating.

It was more the "conservatively billing $800 a day" part that seems like a different universe to me (I am a contract software developer).

Tony Gilroy's mentioned a lot of influences on Andor, few if any of which had anything to do with Star Wars. Off the top of my head: * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_of_Shadows * https://en.wikipedi

Andor is a very good TV show, but it's obviously getting extra appreciation because it's part of a beloved but increasingly exhausted franchise.

I would also like to work on more fun stuff! My uncertainty is whether enough fun paid programming work will appear to fill the gap left by the automation of the boring stuff. I think a lot of people here are more interested in questions li

Of course, but my question stands. Did all the people who used to do easily automatable clerical work remain in those roles? I presume that isn't the case, but like I say I don't really know what happened to them.

Which is how? This is an honest question, I genuinely don't know what happened to all the people who used to be employed to do manual calculations. Or all the people who worked as typists for that matter.

Odd that the photo is Ralph Brown as Danny. Although, if you look at this brief and rare Viv MacKerrell snippet[0], his performance is a lot more Danny than Withnail. [0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc5vCZTkY7g&t=128

My first draft had examples of what "working to pay for somebody else's leisure" means for different people, but I thought it better to omit specifics in favour of the general point.

I think what bothers people is the idea of having to work to pay for somebody else's leisure. Obviously lots of arguments to be had about the specifics of that, but I think it's more about this than a moralistic concern about &quo
