Honestly this reads a bit like a PR-speak way of saying that Diaspora indeed doesn't really provide better privacy than Facebook. I'm on it, and I donate to (or pay for) a pod so I'm not anti-Diaspora by any means, but it jus

Does Diaspora actually provide better privacy than Facebook? It removes the need to trust a centralized entity, but it seems to me that it largely replaces it with the need to trust a multitude of distributed entities. At least if we'

But irrespective of its conceptual quality, why should anybody care, outside of compsci? Why doesn't the doubly linked list get to be a household name or a hotly tipped investment buzzword?

Fair enough, although I'll counter that GIMP didn't actually get single-window mode until 2011 (a full 10 years after that bug report), and it seems like the GIMP devs spent a lot of the intervening period trying to claim lack of

I googled "Photoshop alternative" and GIMP was suggested in the first five hits (I stopped checking after that). There's this annoying FLOSS motte-and-bailey conversation that you see over and over again that starts with &quo

I think this reputation for intransigence was probably merited by ~noughties GIMP team, but it doesn't seem to me to be deserved at present. I think the UX issues that remain are more due to lack of development resources than intransig

Yeah, I think GIMP has this "open source best in class" status that it maybe deserved ~20 years ago but now it's kind of punching above its weight in terms of popularity. That said, I actually think the current devs are doing

My problem isn't that the UI isn't "intuitive", it's that it's bad - eg. the annoying "layer boundary" thing and the tendency for shortcuts to do different things depending on where you focused last

When was this? I remember getting a similar impression like a decade or so ago but I think now GIMP definitely has devs that are interested in usability. And usability has certainly improved in the last few years, although it still has some

Is this the development-hell branch that has exciting stuff like 16 bit colour and GEGL everywhere? If so then a release candidate is quite exciting. Hopefully getting this out of the door will make the roadmap a bit simpler and ease future

On a similar note, the UK's longest ever trial[1] was a libel case about a leaflet that was discovered, 16 years later, to have been co-written by an undercover cop. One of the defendents unwittingly had a two year relationship with a

If you personally don't want to have an internet connection then I'm afraid it's going to be hard for you to run a webserver for free. I think this would be unusual though.

Yes, you can host your own server and use your home internet connection. This is the whole issue really - the web was designed as a decentralized, anarchistic, read/write thing, and it's subsequently become a thing where it's

I think, tbf, that was more about dodging the question of child support than rape. I don't think any of the women targeted by undercover police officers are pursuing rape cases.
