I’ve shifted to trying to get people to use the PowerBI data import function, at least. It offers the ability to import your data without managing it.

You’re right about the (false) equivalency. But I think that “github” is well on its way to being the “kleenex” of version control.

I feel like jkingsbery's comment[1] is relevant here: > One of the interviewer asked me to recite the algorithm for constructing a Convex Hull. > ... > we struggled together for an hour, with him frustrated that I couldn'

Not sure to what extent we need to rethink primary education, vs refining it. Your points 1 and 2 are true _because_ the education system has excelled at increasing the knowledge of the average person.

The last paragraph of this speech is perhaps the best appeal to our better selves a US politician has ever made, in my opinion. The way he seamlessly shifts from acknowledging the current madness to a lofty call-to-greatness gives me chills

As a user, I like where flat design has taken us, generally. But I absolutely agree with you: the loss of “functionality hinting” (I’m sure there’s an actual term for this, but I don’t know what it is) is pretty bad. You can stumble around

I've seen at least one interesting conversation that casts at least doubt on that. https://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2019-May/... But even the use of the word "master" as it re

I agree that overly-aggressive terminology is widely used, pretty much everywhere. Clickbait articles particularly: “They evicerated/destroyed/devastated them”.

This is a bit longer than I intended, but is my point of view, and not intended to dismiss what you’re saying at all. I think it’s easy to dismiss conversations like master/slave whitelist/blacklist as overly PC or childish. I cer

I understand that. If you don't have a # readily available, but your editor allows you mark a line as Heading 1 by pressing Ctrl+1, then it does in fact address their problem.

I have almost entirely switched to using an editor which supports real-time preview for Markdown editing. There is a plugin for my editor (VSCode - but I'm sure that something similar exists for most other editors that support plugins)

This is one of my favorite subreddits. I don’t think I’ve ever even posted in it. It’s like real life Sherlock Holmes sometimes. Quite often people will post a piece of a car involved in a hit and run, and it will be solved in minutes. Or s

I have a base “library” I’ve used for several years that wraps the csv module (specifically DictReader/Writer) to handle encoding issues as well as data parsing. Have run into minor issues, but think that module alone is one of Python’

Importantly, tabs aren’t usually inserted into fields by Excel users. With Power BI, exporting TSV is a little easier for non-dev Excel power users, too.

We don't need the GOP for that. Both the RNC and DNC have dramatically changed their positions over the past 30-40 years. That could happen again (and probably will) if either party suffers a life-threatening loss in elections. Or anot

This is actually a huge + for any extensible chat client. We send alerts from various monitoring solutions and use emoji to quickly identify the environment and app. Makes it very easy to understand exactly what is going on.

It took _forever_ to get a self-hosted Jabber-based chat client going at a mid-sized corporation, about 10 years ago. Someone went “rogue” and set a server up anyway. Our security staff began blocking ports, so it eventually died anyway...
