Hmm. It's also worth considering the possibility that the sex of the child could affect the appetite of the mother.

Hey, it goes both ways. Mark section headers with <h%d> tags instead of <font size="foo"> or <div style="foo">, but don't use <h%d> tags where all you want is formatting. In the same way, use <em> i

We're only talking about ditching karma, the running total for each user. We would still be able to upvote/downvote stories and comments, but those votes would only effect the individual story or comment, not the user who posted it.

No, I don't like the karma system. It has too much potential to discourage dissent. I like the upvote/downvote system for comments and stories, but keeping track of karma turns it into a punishment/reward system.

Ahh, but what if you're not the first person to do that? Be careful about overcompensation.

Yes, really. Undo probably wouldn't be too hard to implement (this already keeps track of who has voted on what), and it would be a helpful feature. Why can't we undo upmods/downmods?

The purpose of advertising is to get people look at your product. The product itself is what determines who sticks around as a user and who wanders off to look at something else. I don't seem to have any advice beyond that.

Yes, the ability to undo a vote would be useful. Shouldn't be that hard to implement, either, given that the site already keeps track of who has upvoted what. I have also noticed that pg's comments have unusually high ratings, whether or n

No, FF users are overzealous advocates of FOSS in general and Firefox in particular. Links, Lynx, and w3m users are too proud of their terminals. Netscape users don't realize it's the 21st century, AOL users are idiots. Flock and Seamonk

If this is your goal, C isn't the best choice either. I'd suggest Java or C#.

Yes, Ubuntu took I think less than an hour to install on my machine. Remember, Gentoo is not the only Linux distro.

Meh. Good points. I and probably a lot of other people are probably feeling pretty stupid right now for falling for this. I think I have a certain combination of gullibility and skepticism that makes me a perfect target for these things.

Yes, it is a blatant troll, but it's also an interesting question. As long as a troll brings interesting discussion and not flame wars, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Hey, troll or not, it's an interesting question. Have you read the other responses? Most are coherent and many are actually quite insightful.

I think you may have a point! Gaah! I still have hope that this will never develop into a full-blown personality cult, partly because people keep posting reminders that PG is not perfect and PG is not always right, especially whenever anyo

Hmm. I'd suggest you try dual-booting (if you aren't already). If you think you might want to switch completely but aren't sure, you could try using most of your disk for Ubuntu but keeping a partition just large enough to hold OS X just

The difference between this and the athletic thing is that it gives athletes an unfair advantage in competitions, whereas science is not primarily competitive.

How is this Hacker News-worthy? When I saw this on the recent posts page I didn't expect it to end up #3 on the front page. Why so many points?

The real question is, how does "academic performance" correlate with actual proficiency? In AP Computer Science, probably not much. I'm taking the test soon (trying to skip the course and go on to fun stuff). At least half the review b

I don't know Perl, but I've read good things about O'Reilly's Programming Perl (also known as The Camel Book). I am looking forward to a time when O'Reilly's Programming Arc exists. It's still too early for that, though.

You know, I couldn't understand that Lisp code snippet he presented either. He converted this Ruby: code == data to this: (eq (code (data))) What? OK, let's translate that to syntax non-Lispers can understand. That means:

Ugh. Please don't. I don't like Windows either, but this is a bad joke and I've seen too many variations on it. I don't want this sort of stuff cluttering up HN; I thought we were above that.
