I think it's important to have a standard API going forward rather than porting to ten different APIs. We'd be more than happy to support OpenRC if you implemented the logind APIs we require.

These are Adobe's concerns, not mine. I don't work for Adobe, but I'm familiar with Flash and have talked to Adobe engineers before. And it's not an easy call to make: keep in mind how many computers have Flash installed

Adobe actually wants to open-source Flash, but they're concerned about the security impact. The source would make it a lot easier to find a 0day and infect somebody's computer. They actually have trusted customers that they share

NVIDIA's kernel module right now just pokes a hole the size of a truck and reams data in from userspace. Valve is looking at using Wayland to power Steam, which means that NVIDIA basically need a proper DRM/KMS part in the kernel,

The Windows driver and Linux driver are based on the same codebase, and NVidia is (rightly so) afraid of security issues in their drivers that could allow somebody to hack somebody's computer remotely with a special TF2 map or somebody

Their initial comments for why Wayland didn't suit their purposes were misguided and incorrect, and Wayland supported all of the features they said it wouldn't. Ignorance isn't really FUD, but both their incorrect comments an

I don't know why you think "service" is a word that systemd got from Windows. The name "service" actually came from the usage of the "service" script to run initscripts, like "sudo service httpd start

systemd has one purpose: to be about system and service management. It will replace everything that deals with services: starting them (whether based on traditional init, scheduling, socket activation, or from a desktop user session), loggi

What about it? If my CGI scripts are Python scripts, how do I kill the CGI processes that Apache launched without killing any that lighttpd launched, or some silly script I wrote to monitor something else?

First of all, systemd does not depend on anything relating to how /usr is mounted. Other components don't work properly with it; it simply detects the case and sends a warning. systemd itself will continue to work fine, but compon

Usually when you kill a service, it's because it's not working properly. If a service is in a broken state, it's not the job of the service to try and cleanly shut itself down; it's the job of the service manager.

I don't know why you think cgroups has anything to do with the /usr split. systemd uses cgroups to tag processes with metadata about services, and to provide resource limits. If you added a stub cgroups, then resource limits would

Process and service management is not a simple problem space, especially with POSIX semantics. Try doing something like "stop apache". It turns out that trying to simply kill the Apache processes isn't going to work right, as

With hindsight, yes, we'd love to do things differently. Saying "you should have done" doesn't really help the current situation here. The gsettings port broke stuff and reintroduced problems. It was long overdue. This means that cutting fe

We'd love to do that, but sometimes it doesn't work that way. If you restart the compositor, in order to not crash, you need to unmap and remap your window with a different visual. So the code needs to be there anywhere if your compositor W

The old code didn't work after the port to GSettings. It crashed in weird places. That's why it was "#if 0"'d around in the GSettings port commit. As I said, the original intention was to fix it, but minds were changed.

I'm that friend. I said to Jonanin: "If you want to know exactly, it's a lot of very, very tricky code that's easy to get wrong, hard to get right, and even when it looks like it's working, there's a large perf cost if it's not 100% right."
