Not really a huge surprise given that the debris was confirmed as a 777 flaperon a few days ago. However, It does mean that the Inmarsat positional analysis about the final location of the plane is likely correct. This should give a bit of

Hi Gavan... Fellow gamedev here; I like your tech; it looks neat! As soon as I saw it, I had a great idea for a game. It's pretty simple too... Imagine a sort of hybrid of Angry Birds and Defender of the Crown ( https://youtu

Presumably the chainring losses are roughly similar for every rider which is why no-one complains about them. Around 6% seems plausible when you remember that for cars crank horsepower is usually 15% higher than wheel horsepower. Transmissi

The valuation seems high to me. I've been told that valuations should be around 3.5x revenue; at $615m, that should mean that DSC has sold $175m of razors last year. I would be astounded if that were the case.

Perhaps if he had made even a token effort to not permit illegal sales on SilkRoad he'd be hailed as the new Jeff Bezos. Instead, he'll be denounced as a drug peddling fraudster. A shame; I thought his ideas had merit.

On the surface the sentence seems a bit steep doesn't it? I expect it's because he attempted to have at least two people killed. I don't think either case succeeded but there was clearly intent to murder.

The trunks mass moves the COG rearwards and when combined with the fins, it provides passive stability that keeps the nose pointing in the direction of travel. Notice that when the trunk detaches, the craft immediately starts pitching over.

One of the main reasons it's hard to restart a rocket in space is simply because there's no gravity to feed the propellant to the outlet of the tank. While the rocket is running, the acceleration caused by the motor causes the pro

Finally something concrete from these guys! They've been working for over 10 years on this and shown almost nothing. The capsule looks nice; big curved windows and no RCS thrusters tell us that this is not an orbital capsule. The 1st S

Their website says that they employ solid landing rockets just before touchdown, similar to the Soyuz. The 'big whumph' is probably just dust kicked up by these rockets.

I think it's very hard to make that determination. In spaceflight, all accidents are likely to be fatal. Also, I have no problem with a profit-motive; killing your passengers is very bad for business.

You are right. Hybrid engines are not looking like the safe & reliable middle-ground between solid & liquid engines that they were made out to be.

Agreed. Don't forget that this is not the first fatality associated with this engine. In 2007, 3 people were killed in an explosion during a static test at Mohave Air & Space port.

Yes, looking at the twitter feed, multiple sources state that it blew up. This means that either the tank (which takes up the whole rear half of the vehicle) failed catastrophically (unlikely; CF-wrapped tanks tend to develop hairline crack

This is very bad. Not just for the family and friends of the poor guy who died, but for commercial manned spaceflight in general. SpaceshipTwo is considered the 'simplest' and 'safest' of all the upcoming manned commerci

You're right... NASA probably would value stability and reliability over cost-effectiveness every time. But then again... I think they're hurting for money; SLS is proving much more expensive than planned. And they have a lot of p

If I were NASA, I'd pick SpaceX and Sierra Nevada and here's why: Boeing CST100 is the most conventional of all the 3 designs. It's probably the 'safest' bet but also the most expensive to operate. This is because i

Some thoughts: Games sites, (especially game dev sites) suffer from a horrendous signal to noise ratio. We tend to have a very large, well-meaning but uninformed audience who enjoy participating in discussions but do not offer much experien

Orbital has the US rights to build new copies of the original NK-33. Presumably they'd set up some kind of production line once they have enough customers to exhaust their russian-sourced supply.
