It’s fascinating so much of this comes down to the developer’s own ears - disturbing and quite cool at the same time how subjective this is

This is so shockingly naive I feel I’m being trolled. Your inability to give a chalk talk on your own field without AI is mind boggling.

This is the first HN app that immediately clicks for me. Would absolutely love it if the text could be made bigger (both for reading and commenting)! By the way, this reply was posted using the HackerNows app itself :-)

The former Trump US ambassador to the Netherlands, Pete Hoekstra, claimed there were “no go zones” in the Netherlands where politicians and cars were being set on fire. He called it “fake news” of course, then denied having ever called it f

Looks like he’s doing 1M INSERTs per transaction. In his 2nd example he’s doing the same thing, except he first sorts the data for each of those 1M INSERTs, leading to a 2-3x speedup.

How do people use terminal multiplexers together with vim? Ctrl+B is so hardwired in my fingers for scrolling back one screen that there's no way I'm remapping that one in vim itself. So then you have to remap that in your termina

Correct. Almost every country subsidizes domestic industry. Just off the top of my head: Boeing, Farm subsidies, CHIPS act (approx 52B), Oil drilling, GM & Chrysler bailouts, Airline bailouts, State tax breaks for Amazon, etc

Slight tangent, but “Wayfinder sits behind whatever OpenAI-compatible client you already use” reminds me that descriptions of where proxies sit in the information flow always seem so arbitrary to me: - “after the client” - “reverse pr

I hate it too. On my last trip I had to tip baristas 20% for standing behind the counter and taking my order. I generously tip when someone does a great job, but do I really have to for doing the bare minimum? Very frustrating as I know it

If Mitchell defines taste as “making frequent and high-quality judgements without objective metrics”, then that implies there are subjective metrics that matter. So then who is the arbiter of good taste? Whose subjective opinion matters?

MacBooks with their unified memory behave like a slow GPU with enormous amount of video RAM. So you can run large smart models slowly. Dedicated GPUs have less video RAM so can run smaller less smart models quickly.

In the near term I see how this makes sense. With Open Source they’re engaging in a never ending war over who can throw the smartest model at the code - the attackers or the defenders. By not providing the code they’re making a rational dec
