This has existed for some time already - FOAF+SSL. It uses X509 certificates and user owned FOAF files that can be provided by themselves or served from another resource. What's even more cool, is, the user doesn't need to "log in" nor crea

Stream of consciousness helps you "get it out" where you can objectify it much easier and treat it like an external item. So, it's good that you are feeling better, but you will (at some point) want to pivot those subjects so you actually f

You'll probably have to do it with the kids - a few weeks isn't enough to immerse yourself in culture. You'll just end up swimming around in the western bubble. Live an alternative life style with your kids, show them the world isn't a scar

A good point - awareness of where your center of gravity [in life] is - an important quality to cultivate. RE: girlfriends that are the opposite. I agree, it is very possible but it has been my experience that either foreign or alt chicks a

That's why you figure that shit out before you get the wife and the mortgage. But, either way, you can still do it you just have to do it slowly and in your free time. Making your passion your full time job does not make it annoying!!!! I

You mean, wait for a few years (saving up?) and then just go straight into a four year? Maybe doing a class on the side here and there to prepare? That's the direction I'm leaning in.

I did finish high school, but I hadn't even finished Alg2; I've shored up my math in recent years through self-education - through Algebra1-2 and some Trig, but I would have to take at least three semester's worth of mathematics classes in

It might be innovative in the sense of cinema advertisement (as you stated) but much of this isn't anything new. Most subliminal messaging only works if the recipient is willing to accept the idea that the advertisers want to plant; social

Instead of just concatenating a salt to the password string, I use a dispersion method. I first concat the salt to the beginning of the password and SHA512 that. I then have a globally configured list in my app (it's different for every app

Thanks for the answer and the link. My salting algorithm is very strong but I hadn't considered the idea of renting a bunch of EC2 instances and brute-forcing hashes because the hashing algorithms are so fast.

Question, I use SHA512 for my passwords; is that also "fast" in comparison to bcrypt?

This topic has beaten to death, I will point you to this resource since it is an excellent exposition of both GNU/Linux's and FreeBSD's strengths: http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/rants/bsd4linux/01

Dying? That may be true of the other BSD's but FreeBSD appears to be thriving; some very big companies, universities, &c... use and rely on FreeBSD. OpenBSD appears to be alive and well too, but from my perspective FreeBSD tends to have

Great work Colin! I'm definitely going to jump on the free usage tier and experiment with it. I've been holding out, entirely, for FreeBSD to come to EC2.

I was referring to both the author and Shteyngart using the masculine pronoun to make what I had written, "more personal" (instead of using "they"); a bit loose, I know, but this is a casual discussion medium.

True RE: large files that don't really need to be versioned. I use a mix of shell scripts that manage rsync'ing large files and mercurial for anything that isn't binary.

SSH and rsync? Or even better, use hg/bzr/git to maintain a version history of the files and then just sync across devices (it's uber easy with Mercurial, not sure about the other two). I personally use the latter (Mercurial).
