I think these things do help with programming in a manner that is probably hard to measure. Making something has an affect, I find hard to describe, on my ability to think logically and creatively (in more areas than just programming, b

Well, yeah, that's what useful stack traces are for - but stack traces aren't useful in the least when you click on a button and it's supposed to do x but it's doing y; how do you figure out why it isn't doing something it's supposed to b

I think a few of the commenters are misinterpreting the message he was attempting to convey (or maybe I am!). What I took from that article was that, as a musician, spending too much time making youtube videos - posting stuff up on myspace

I manage a remote worker and I'm the CTO of my own co-founded startup; yes there's a lot of stuff going on all at once, but I think it's a bit extreme to posit anything related to mental illness. If someone tanks like that, it's their failu

I work from home all the time and I agree heartily with what you've said regarding burnout. It's that "work feels empty and I don't want to touch a computer" feeling and I can always tell when it starts to come on, usually following an inte

I imagine with it being in Santa Clara you're going to get a large number of people from every development niche showing up. The main reason I didn't go to 2011 is because of how far it was!

Buffers are truly amazing - combined with powerful buffer naming patterns, it's a breeze switching between buffers blindly (included with autocomplete) and if you forget about which buffers are open it's a keystroke away to see an overview

Not really. Often copies or stolen birth certificates, SS cards, and passports are sold to forgers that can use them to make fake passports and identities. So it isn't to necessarily impersonate you (although it can be used for that). You c

FreeNAS actually recommends you install the OS on a flash disk (whether that's a 3.5 or a USB stick doesn't matter) so that the disks can be reserved entirely for storage.

FreeNAS works really well on a little 1GB USB stick - dedicating ALL of the SATA connectors to disks.

It's like that with a lot of things I suppose - you make it what you want. For a while I scoffed at "SEO" but my cofounder dragged me into starting a company and before I knew it I had more interesting engineering problems to solve (still d

As an engineer building an SEO company, I can think of plenty of reasons NOT to love SEO. Every coin has two sides (which is, effectively, what I said in the other comment) :)

Generally speaking, I agree with you. I down voted though because it's a silly statement to make when you really think about it in a more dynamic way: * Perspective is subjective * SEO isn't everything you think it is I'm an engine

I known I'm a bit late here, you probably won't see this. I originally did use scrypt, actually, because I'm a fan of Colin's work but I was turned off by the lack of rigorous 3rd party crypto analysis of his reference implementation. Som
