I have personally seen this within organizations. Certain leaders can appreciate the simple approach, but not others, because it doesn’t increase headcount. For other leadership types it is drama and increasing headcount that drive their ca

Can someone point to a book that gives a good overview of the wage stagnation that started in the 70s (in the US), with the decline of unions and those jobs being sent outside of the country?

Right, electric motors can develop max torque at zero rpm (and with no shifter), this is similar to steam engines. That’s why many diesel locomotives are actually diesel-electric, with a diesel power plant generating electricity for motors

My friend relies on his implausibility detector quite a lot. He never takes care to calibrate it though. It’s leading to a rift in our friendship.

The stated goal of the founder is to replace meat consumption. Why would you create a charity for that? That makes no sense. You need to create a whole new industry, and yes, it has to pay for itself.

This is really the goal of Impossible Foods. It’s to transition to a sustainable future by winning over consumers who prefer meat, and can only be persuaded by taste. I hope they manage to get the price down, then it will be competitive in

Agreed that intuition can be useful, same as making a guess or going with your “gut feeling”. A crank turns that useful but possibly misleading thing into a crusade where truth is being suppressed by the establishment.

There’s a great book on Mathematical Cranks where one of the recurring themes is that the intuition must always be correct, and anything that seems counterintuitive is abhorrent and must be wrong.

There’s a language joke in Uncle from Another World, where to pass himself off as an elf girl he adds a “-wa” to his sentences in a completely unconvincing way because that’s “how girls talk”. So in this case is -wa a particle? What kind?
