You could argue that a taste for convenience is a pretty good definition of a quality developer ;)

There are a few problems with doing that, in my experience. First, from a theoretical point of view, Javascript is an functional language. That's ideal for expressing event-driven behavior. Not so great for expressing style information.

In the long run, I think that maintaining a blog does have to do with a programmers competence. Programming is a social activity. Communication and discussion are important. Even if no one reads your blog, the act of regularly putting ins

Completely agree. After a few years doing this job and taking it seriously, diligent practice and all that, anyone who's reasonably bright should be at the top level in at least a few of these categories. But it's always good to spot areas

Well, that's just it. The kind of power that I think hackers crave is the kind that you can't buy with money. Even if you had billions of dollars to throw at the problem, you could never be as relevant a figure in shaping the face of tec

Interesting. I see power a bit differently. Power is one's ability to affect the world. "Getting other people to do what you want" doesn't really cut to the core of the matter. Jobs and Wozniak, Gates, Torvalds, Brin and Page, these peopl

+1 for slicehost. Simple, easy VPS, just works, plenty of very handy tools. Upside of any VPS, you get to manage the whole server. Downside, you have to actually manage your server. I've used DreamHost, but their crap up-time and extra c

Power > Money. It's practically a hacker axiom. Money matters, but changing the world is what really matters. Money is just a way to be able to work on changing the world without having to worry about keeping the rent paid. Thanks f

Replace the whole page so that the top-level URL in the address bar says "yahoo" or "google" when they're signing in. Otherwise you're just another phisher. "Normal" users don't care. But they'll learn and eventually expect the conventions

Yahoo has lots of documentation organized in a single library. That's what the "developer.yahoo.com" bit is. Yahoo's is just better organized.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Is the "tax" the upfront cost of writing code that uses static typing? If so, I most strongly disagree. Static typing is not a silver bullet. The claim that not using a static typed language f

Well, I don't feel like YUI tries to make JS into Java. The goal of YUI is to add some extra APIs under a single global object, and pretty much let you write your code however you want. It's a library that quietly does nothing if you don'
