I used to be a massive evo-psych fan, but somehow reading this post with it's tabloid 'aren't we daring to be politically incorrect' attitude really rankled me. I think it was reading Douglas Hofstadters 'Metamagical Themas' that made me mo

I'm a couchsurfing afficionado as well, but this site appeals to me, partially because it ISN'T free. I always feel too obliged to my hosts, and handing over a small some of money would assuage my guilt that I hadn't thanked them enough.

Solutions to class assignments don't generally "increase human knowledge". The only people they will be useful to are students looking to cheat. A lot of people on BoingBoing were saying that the prof should generate a new assignment each t

I had a similar discussion with my friend about this; we're both students, looking to launch web businesses. I'm of the philosophy 'launch a crappy version one and iterate' (I read a lot of pg's essays), he's worried that if his site isn't

I'm the same. I'm a bit of a noob with web dev, but I've recently started work on my second medium-sized web project. Since doing my first one, I've learned a bit about database normalisation, but in some ways it proved a stumbling block: I

It's not just the networking; it's the status you get from going to such an institution, especially if it's 'elite'. I guessing there are relatively few 18-year-olds who consider the networking potential of university, wheras lots probably

Agreed. The article is basically a defence of group selection against gene selection. Quite a few of his arguments seem to be about definitions, rather than any scientific issues. His bio: "Not too much to report, father of two scientists,

Should add that the "Top n things" kind of posts are inordinately popular on these kind of websites (Digg is much worse). I wonder what the appeal is? Perhaps internet users are at the centre of a Venn diagram: geeky types, who like things

Agree massively. This is one of the reasons why books are often still better than the internet: you're more likely to get some meaty information, rather than a list of vague points. These kind of posts are like knowledge candy, fun to consu

"Values updated every 5 minutes". Looking at the source (I don't actually know JavaScript, but it seems pretty simple) I'm assuming that means they get the current TwitID AND the current rate of increase.

That book sounds interesting, I had a look at the website. Has anyone else read it? I want to know if it's worthwhile (well-thought-out, researched, etc), or just another guy on the 'net with some opinions. Anyway, I agree with posters abov

Tried three tests: my own name, "Clojure tutorials" (something I've been looking for recently), and ""ORG directives in assembly code" (something I had trouble finding recently). Scores - Google 1, Yahoo 1, Bing 1. Not a very large sample s

Agree massively. If you read up on some of the ideas behind philosophy, it makes a lot of sense as a "philosophy of the modern age". Of course, there's a lot of garbage ideas in there as well, but it's worth at least reading up on the basic

Currently a Warwick student. It's a great university, and I'm glad I chose to come here than try to apply for Oxbridge - I believe they are the best universities in the UK, but not by such a massive margin as people make out. If you say you

I think a lot of "startups" would be better off calling themselves projects. There's nothing wrong with being a project: Wikiepdia's a project, GNU/Linux is a project. But neither of them ever expected to make money; the same could be said

StumbleUpon. Faecbook, as well, but not so much. There's not as much to do on there. StumbleUpon is a potentially infinite time sink. In fact, I'd say Google Reader has increased my productivity, since once I've skimmed the days articles fr
