this is why I'm going to the US, in a nutshell. Sadly, there are not a lot of options at that level here.. (aside from working in a local Google office)

This looks like Fountain codes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fountain_code Basically, you split your data into blocks, XOR random blocks together and the client can recreate the data by solving the equation of which blocks where XORed wit

At least in my university solutions to all past problems are posted anyway, we even have our own wiki for it. I imagine it's similar in other universities. (fwiw, I use Github exactly in this way, only with public repos)

As someone taking the course - yes, it was pretty obvious. And even if he had said nothing, it's common sense that uploading other's solutions as your own is frowned upon.

I for one like the new keyboard and think it's great. (I used both old and new keyboard on two Thinkpads simultaneously for 2 months)

I've never really been able to get into Vim, but this is completely awesome! Especially on laptops, where scrolling and hitting links without a mouse is really annoying normally. (yes, I know, page up / down, but those scroll too much)

How is this different from: http://www.alteredelectricskateboards.com/pro-line_600.htm Except that it has twice the price and half the range? Ok, seems like it's significantly ligther (12 vs 40 lbs). Any other differences? Stronger motors

To be fair though, Dropbox is way better than any other backup solution consumers usually use. Personally, I've never seen data loss occur on Dropbox, but I'm sure it can happen - it's just way less likely than the average user messing up t

This. I have a keyboard with a hardware switch for Dvorak/Qwerty, and whenever I'm playing on this keyboard I can't for the life of me type a coherent sentence. Under other circumstances, I can type both on dvorak and qwerty just fine, but

Sharing a bike is cool if you need it only sometimes, like a few times a month or less. Or if you don't have space to store your own bike.

Well, specialized hardware is generally more efficient than general purpose hardware. (see CPU vs GPU for graphics) So it might use a little bit more power than h264 with hardware acceleration, but probably not all that much.

Not if you have hardware support, ie the GPU does the decoding.

Well duh. Same as you make sure no sharp, pointy objects are lying around and electric outlets have child safeties. Should we ban knifes now because children could cut themselves?

There's actually a very simple solution to this problem: "Save As" before you make any changes at all. Only then, in the new version, start to make your changes. Problem solved.

Yes. Especially ThinkPads seem to be very well supported (typing this on a X220), with everything working out of the box, amazing battery life (up to 12 hours on mine) and a very stable system in general.

The taxation rate seems just wrong to me - 471 million for a 1 billion heritage is almost 50%. Imagine that going on for three generations and suddenly you've payed more than the heritage's value in taxes! I'm not sure why they inherited it

DVI/VGA only works if the GPU puts out VGA in the first place - the VGA signal just happens to be present in the same cable.

I have found that XBMC makes for the ultimate entertainment PC. Simply install Ubuntu, put XBMC in autostart and enjoy. It catalogs all the movies and TV shows you've got on your HDDs and displays them in a stunning UI.
