Similar-ish. A stranger saved me from drowning when I was a kid. I actually only have vague memories of this though.

I can sympathize but the comment that “This commercial single-handedly ruined my Christmas spirit” is insane to me. Who cares so much about advertisements lol.

LTT is my most watched channel according to YouTube rewind, but this one was one of my favourite of all time.. I was excited for this to drop as soon as Fake Linus started to hint at it.

I don’t know about the wider Perl community, but I listened to some interviews from Larry Wall and he just came across as a nerdy guy having fun with what he’s doing. I quite liked listening to him.

One that is really insane to me is Ads when driving on the highway. I can’t recall seeing that in Europe, but now in Canada when I take the highway there’s Ads everywhere. Some of them rotate. Ironically they also have a sign that changes,

I’ve been working in FAANG for some years in a senior position. Never had to track or speak to things like this lol.

Honestly one of my main healthcare related complaints about living in Canada is not having centralized health records. Sometimes Europe feels like living 2 decades in the future lol.

I think that might be worse than just having the high price. Such a kafka-esque systems just to get medicine.

Not a meaningful difference. I can't recall a time when I got prescription drugs in EU and had to pay a lot.

I know the current administration isn’t exactly known for well-thought out decisions. But I do wonder what metric they’d hope to influence with this. More safety? Probably not. Less immigration? Probably - but limiting H1B is likely bad for

That’s true I suppose. Belgium had incredibly effective “PR” essentially turning “us” from the aggressor to the victim due to WW1 breaking out and effectively erasing Congo from the Zeitgeist. I highly recommend the book “King Leopold’s Gho

Legal productivity at the expense of actual productivity! As a Belgian, it does frustrate me that this is what we’re getting known for.

I read this as a negative. As in, as soon as someone without experience touches JavaScript, everything becomes complex quickly. Which is probably somewhat true now in the GenAI + over-engineered framework age.

I always took the HL3 memes more as a good-faith joke. Like it's part of gaming culture more than a serious jab at them. I personally can't wait for "SteamOS 2: Episode 2 part 1" :)

Oh wow I didn’t know Eclipse was an IBM product originally. IDEs have come so far since Eclipse 15 years ago. And while I’m writing this I just finished up today’s advent of code using vim instead of a “real IDE” haha

The “understand one layer below where you work” is something my professors at uni told us 10+ years ago. Not sure where that originated from, but I really think that benefited me in my career. I.e understanding the JVM when dealing with Jav

People in the comments seem confused about this with statements like “greenest AI is no AI” style comments. And well, obviously that’s true but it’s an apples to pears comparison. Clearly Ecosia is pushing for “people want AI” _and_ we want

I think this will do exactly nothing for RTO, neither increase nor decrease the push from management. The decisions around RTO seem to be more “gut feeling” based than data driven. Look at Amazon, a supposedly “data driven company”. During

Yes to some extent, I believe “The Finals” asked to rate how each match went in earlier seasons. But that stopped now that the game is more mature and feeling well balanced. Cod MW2019 would occasionally ask, but once every X game IIRC.

You should go tell that to the waiters who are working for tips. Reads a bit like you’re in a bubble. I have friends in the States who work in education, construction, and hospitality. I similarly have friends working in those fields in EU.

I have been a dual booting user since 2008. I tried to get rid of the dual boot around 2010-2012 but gaming just didn’t work well at the time. To this day I only ever use windows for gaming. Wonder if it’s time to try gaming on Linux again.

Indeed, dogs are useful. IIRC humans domesticated dogs before plants and other mammals. I read that in “Guns, Germs and Steel” by Jared Diamond. It’s a good read if anyone is interested in how Eurasia got so dominant.

I agree, I agree. I’m not a fan of the farming methods we have today mostly because of ethical reasons (hence why I’m vegetarian as well). We are definitely making things worse, also by our use of antibiotics in livestock.
