This looks like an attack to functional programming mainly. And if you follow Haskell closely I think that the guys building it are well aware that the world is actually full of side effects. But the thing is that if they push the "pur

Thats does not sound like the whole truth. I would guess that Java long ago lost its sexiness - now everybody and everything uses Java. The other problem is that now there is vast amount of legacy code. By choosing Scala you are actually el

So right. Just spin the damn jetty, put the postgre driver and off you go. Most of the infrastructure is done in a day or two, and if not enough you can always revisit it later. And it runs fast. So fast that it feels like dynamic language.

I don't dismiss the creativity and innovation, on the contrary. I just dismiss blindly following the what other people are doing just because they are famous and/or vocal. I was thinking about innovation this morning actually - how do we in

Sure, but that was my mistake - I meant CS more general, product/project development way. And looking from this point the two are pretty much involved. Also in this context the development maybe starts to look a lot like a design. Also rece

So in the end CS is actually more about fashion then fashion. We can draw the parallels it is not pretty - the C?O are the designers (the more successful the more high profile). The developers working in these high profile companies are the

I come to think that the main issue with doing web with Java is the inability to do auto reload. There is somewhat way to do this in case of using remote debugging, but it works only on method level. And even when this works, most of the Ja

So wrong. And its like - we know better how big letters you can read. You don't. I zoom almost all sites on my iphone, on 13" mac and on my work's 27" imac. Its all the same - I need at least some font increase to read it comfortably, becau

I think that monad is actually the "." in the OO world. This is because in my view the monad actually sits in between the functions and controls the function combinations and the value between the threading. So for instance Maybe will decid

Random thoughts: - One of the biggest problems we have is how to produce and preserve energy in large quantities in environmentally efficient way. If we are able to do that then 1, 2 and 4 are just nothing special. We will be able to tackle

I would also ask "so"? Everybody can imagine lots of stuff. Its far more important who will make them real and economically viable. I was dreaming (e.g. predicting) YouTube in 1998, but that does not mean that I consider that I've done some

Well... External QA for app which costs 2.99$ (or less at times)? No. We just tried to make sure it worked properly - some code reviews, several unit tests to cover some nasty edge cases and that's it. I really hope everybody is alive and w

I was kind of expected that the Java will win this, but I think this is clearly misleading. Java is an OK language IMO, its just the open source and j2ee part are bad. But if you let the assumptions which come from sun, oracle and other j2
